    • The subject invention relates to comb polymers having a halobutyl rubber backbone and to techniques for synthesizing such polymers. The comb polymers of this invention can be thermoplastic elastomers. For instance, halobutyl rubbers having sidechains which are derived from vinyl aromatic monomers are thermoplastic elastomers which can be made by a technique of the subject invention. Such thermoplastic elastomers typically have a chlorobutyl rubber backbone and side chains which are comprised of polystyrene. The subject invention more specifically discloses a process for grafting a lithium terminated vinyl aromatic polymer onto a halobutyl rubber which comprises: (1) capping the lithium terminated vinyl aromatic polymer with a diene monomer to produce a lithium terminated diene capped vinyl aromatic polymer, and (2) reacting the lithium terminated diene capped vinyl aromatic polymer with the halobutyl rubber to produce a halobutyl rubber having vinyl aromatic sidechains grafted thereto.

    • There is disclosed an aqueous medium comprising water to which has been added a water thickening amount of a water thickening polymer which is prepared by polymerizing at least one alkyl acrylate monomer and at least one carboxylic polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid which are present from 20 to 95 parts by weight per hundred parts of total monomer being polymerized and utilizing, as an ionic emulsifier, an emulsifier selected from the group consisting of disodium or diammonium nonylphenoxy polyethoxy sulfosuccinate having the general formula:CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.8 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.8-16 COCH.sub.2 CH(COOM)SO.sub.3 Qwherein Q is sodium or ammonium and a sodium or ammonium lauryl polyethoxysulfate having the general formula:CH.sub.2 (CH.sub.2).sub.11 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.8-16 SO.sub.3 Qwherein Q is sodium or ammonium, said polymer in latex form being neutralized to a pH ranging between a pH of 5.5 to 11.5. The aqueous gels are employed in enhanced oil recovery.

    • The present invention relates to a modified rubber composition comprising:(a) an uncured diene rubber selected from the group consisting of polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene-styrene rubber, nitrile rubber and carboxylated nitrile rubber;(b) from about 1 to 100 phr of a polymeric blend containing(i) from about 10 to 35 weight percent of at least one nylon,(ii) from about 65 to 90 weight percent of at least one polyolefin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polypropylene modified with ethylene, and ethylene/propylene copolymers, and(iii) from about 1 to about 10 weight percent of an anhydride modified polyolefin containing from 0.2 to 9% by weight of chemically combined anhydride; and(c) at least one dithio diacid having the formula HOOC--A--S--S--A--COOH wherein A represents an alkylene group containing from about 1 to 10 carbon atoms.

    • Improved green strength of elastomers made from monomers selected from the class consisting of at least one conjugated diene having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms, olefins having from 2 to 14 carbon atoms along with a diene having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and combinations thereof, is achieved by adding an amount of a polydimethylbutadiene compound to form a blend having a glass transition temperature of from about 0.degree. C to about -100.degree. C. The polydimethylbutadiene compound may be merely the homopolymer of dimetylbutadiene, the copolymer, the terpolymer or the tetrapolymer of dimethylbutadiene in various combinations with monomers such as butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, vinyl pyridine, methacrylic acid and vinyl substituted aromatic compounds.
