    • A plug container, such as can be used during a cementing operation at an oil or gas well, includes one or more plug holders which seal against a bypass sleeve when the plugs carried in the holders are released to separate columns of fluid pumped into the well. The bypass sleeve is responsive to fluid pressure so that when sufficient fluid pressure is applied to the bypass sleeve, it lifts the plug holder(s) and uncovers one or more cleanout ports in at least one plug holder. The uncovered cleanout port(s) allow residue fluid, such as cement, to flow out of the plug container. The pressurized fluid can be applied through a hose connected to a single structural member of the plug container so that the hose does not need to be disconnected when the remainder of the plug container is being assembled or disassembled.

    • A subsea inflation and grout system for use on subsea supports of offshore drilling platforms and the like. The system includes at least one grout control valve and at least one inflation control valve, each of which has a piston therein with a side always exposed to hydrostatic pressure from the sea when submerged. In the event of damage to the grout line to the grout control valve or the inflation line to the inflation control valve, the piston in the valve is pressure balanced so that hydrostatic pressure cannot prematurely or accidentally move the piston. The piston in the grout control valve is held in place by a shear pin. The piston in the grout control valve is held in place by a spring. The piston in the inflation control valve further defines a passage therethrough, and a check valve is disposed in the passage for preventing fluid flow from the outlet of the inflation control valve to the inlet even when the piston is in an open position.

    • A tieback packer apparatus and method for packing a well annulus above a gravel packed liner screen. The packer includes a body with a mandrel slidingly disposed therein. Originally, the mandrel is shearably pinned to the body. The body includes a lower packer support for a packer element annularly disposed around the mandrel. An upper packer support is also shearably pinned to the mandrel and includes a wedge. A plurality of slips are positioned above the wedge. Downward motion of the mandrel shears the shear pins and transfers force through a spring, thus forcing the slips toward the wedge and outwardly into gripping engagement with the well bore. The spring keeps the slips engaged while preventing excessive slip drag. Further downward movement of the mandrel sets the packer element into sealing engagement with the well bore. The packer may be retrieved by reengaging the releasing mechanism. Lifting sequentially unsets the slips, as well as unsetting the packer element.

    • A gravel pack safety sub selectively positionable in rotational or a non-rotational mode. The safety sub includes an adapter having lugs thereon and a mandrel having lugs thereon adjacent the adapter. A retainer attached to the adapter receives an end of the mandrel. The mandrel and retainer define an annular cavity therebetween, and a sleeve is positioned in the cavity. The sleeve has a hole therein which is nearer a first end thereof than a second end. The hole is alignable with an exterior recess in the mandrel and a shear pin positioned therethrough. The safety sub may be placed in a first position wherein the second end of the sleeve is adjacent the adapter and the lugs on the mandrel and adapter are separated. A bearing ring is positioned between the adapter and the mandrel for maintaining the separation of the lugs and providing a bearing surface therebetween. In a second position, the sleeve is reversed such that the first end thereof is adjacent the mandrel and the lugs are mutually engaged, thus preventing relative rotation between the adapter and mandrel. No bearing ring is used in the second position. If the bearing ring is removed from the apparatus when in the first position, the adapter and mandrel may be moved between the first and second positions.

    • A cementing head is provided for introduction and separation of fluids in a well. The cementing head comprises a plug container having upper and lower fluid inlets oriented tangent to the bore of the plug container. The upper inlet is located below the upper end of the plug so that a compact manifold can be used therewith. The compact manifold includes first and second discharge tees which may be connected by a one-piece coupling such that rotation of the coupling in one direction causes the discharge tees to seal against a spacer therebetween and rotation in a second direction causes the discharge tees to move apart from one another. A coupling for quick coupling of the plug container to a casing collar is also provided. The coupling apparatus comprises a locking clamp having pivotally connected arcuate clamp portions. Each arcuate clamp portion engages a lower end of a casing collar. A threaded adjustment is provided for increasing an initial compression of a seal against the upper end of the casing collar.

    • The present invention provides improved casing filling and circulating apparatus for running a casing string into a well bore using a drilling rig casing elevator and related equipment. The casing filling and circulating apparatus includes a flow passage therethrough and a check valve disposed within the flow passage for preventing spillage and for preventing fluid back-flow through the apparatus when the casing string is being lowered into a well bore. Additionally, the filling and circulating apparatus includes a pressure relief seal means which relieves pressure from the casing prior to when the filling and circulating apparatus is disconnected therefrom by back-flow through the apparatus thereby preventing spillage of fluid. Methods of using the casing filling and circulating apparatus are also provided.
