    • An actuator assembly is provided for controlling the position of a multi-track, magneto-resistive transducer to index across tracks in a track seek mode and to rapidly adjust the position of the transducer in a servo controlled track following mode. The actuator includes a base, a beam spaced from the base and movable relative thereto, opposing upper and lower flexures in parallel planes connecting upper and lower portions of the base with upper and lower ends, respectively, of the beam, and an electromagnetic drive means. Each flexure comprises a constraining member fastened to and substantially covering a plate. The constraining member has a plurality of voids formed therein. In one embodiment, the voids comprise parallel openings extending through the constraining member; in another embodiment, the voids define a honeycomb structure; in still another embodiment, the voids define a corrugated structure. Each flexure also has an inner and an outer end, each of which includes a plurality of spaced apart, flexible, necked extensions projecting beyond a central portion of the constraining member. These necked extensions, to which the base and beam are connected, serve as the hinge points of the flexures to maintain the transducer in precise alignment with the tape without significant skewing.

    • Fluid is introduced under pressure to the operative face of a magnetic head to lift the magnetic media out of contact with the transducers when the media is stationary or about to be stopped. The media is lifted only locally with respect to the multiple transducers of the magnetic head. The fluid pressure tents the tape with the pressure adjusted such that the media forms a seal with the head at the edges of the media to hold the fluid within the tent-like structure. Slots formed in the magnetic head at the leading and trailing edges allow the fluid to escape to keep the media from excessively lifting from the magnetic head. The fluid pressure is under control of a valve that introduces the pressure to the operative face of the head as well as opening the operative face to atmospheric pressure when the fluid pressure is halted to permit the media tension to quickly pull the media back into contact with the transducers by assisting the slots in dissipating the fluid pressure.

    • The disclosure describes an electro-optical tachometer assembly for use with a device having a movable part and a fixed part (for example, a motor, an electrophotographic system, etc). The electro-optical tachometer assembly comprises a movable assembly and a fixed assembly. The movable assembly includes a movable disk while the fixed assembly includes a fixed mask. A gap between the movable disk and the fixed mask is preset by a spacer assembly. The gap is maintained constant by a resilient member which loads the fixed assembly against the movable assembly.A light emitting diode (LED) phototransistor assembly is situated relative to the tachometer assembly and outputs electrical signals indicative of shaft speed, direction of shaft rotation, etc. Synchronization of the tachometer output to the shaft is accomplished by a guide pin arrangement.
