    • A multiline access module for connection of a number of telephone lines to a station set. The station set is controlled by a microprocessor and communicates with the access module through a communications channel to select one telephone line for connection to the station and to read the line status, ringing, on-hook, seized, no connection, or hold, for each line; the microprocessor controlling audible and visual indicators accordingly. The access module monitors voltage levels on each line to determine the line status. Each access module includes apparatus for connection to first and second groups of telephone lines and when two modules are interconnected by an appropriately polarized cable each will activate a different connection apparatus, allowing two modules to be connected in parallel for greater line capacity.

    • A machine, such as a dictation/transcription machine, is provided with a processor that is programmed to cycle through a set of instructions for selecting and controlling predetermined operating conditions. The actuation of one of a number of selector switches is sensed, and it is determined whether the machine exhibits the operating condition associated with the actuated switch. If so, that condition is terminated; but if not, the machine is disposed in the associated condition. If the aforementioned switch is not actuated, the actuation of a second switch associated with the same condition is sensed. If that second switch is actuated, the machine is disposed in the associated condition; and when that second switch subsequently is deactuated, the associated condition is terminated. These steps are cyclically repeated. In one embodiment, the aforementioned operating condition is a power ON condition, and the first switch is a manually operable power switch, such as a push button switch, and the second switch may be either a cradle switch or an accessory power switch. In accordance with another embodiment, the operating condition is a telephone mode of operation, whereby voice signals are received via the telephone network and recorded by the dictation/transcription machine. If the machine is not then disposed in its telephone mode, the actuation of a telephone switch establishes this mode, while overriding other operating conditions that may have been present. The status of such overridden conditions are stored and reinstated when the telephone switch is reactuated to terminate the telephone mode of operation.

    • Apparatus is provided for operating a dictation unit as a telephone-answering device. The dictation unit has a movable record medium upon which an announce message is recorded at a predetermined portion. Switching circuitry is selectively operable to condition the dictation unit to operate as a telephone-answering device, and a line coupler connects the dictation unit to a telephone line. An activate arrangement is operable when the dictation unit is conditioned to operate as a telephone-answering device to respond to an incoming ringing signal on the telephone line for activating the movable record medium to advance at a playback speed so as to transmit the announce message over the telephone line and, at the conclusion of the announce message, to advance to the next available recording portion thereon to record an incoming message. In a preferred embodiment, the dictation unit is operable either as a telephone-answering device or as a remote dictation machine wherein the record medium is advanced at a recording speed to record an incoming message thereon in response to an incoming telephone call. In the telephone-answering mode, the record medium is rewound to the beginning of the announce message thereon at the conclusion of each incoming telephone call, thus being in condition to transmit that same announce message in response to the next incoming telephone call. After the announce message is transmitted, the record medium is advanced rapidly past all previously recorded incoming messages until the next available recording portion is reached.

    • A telephone terminal or a combined telephone-dictation terminal is disclosed. Such telephone apparatus includes a handset having a microphone and a speaker together with a speakerphone having a microphone and a speaker. Such telephone apparatus also includes a hook switch, which detects on-hook and off-hook conditions of the handset, a speakerphone switch, and a control mechanism, which is responsive to the hook switch and the speakerphone switch. The control mechanism may successively enable and disable at least one of the speakerphone microphone and the speakerphone speaker in response to successive operations of the speakerphone switch during the on-hook condition. Preferably, such a control mechanism (a) enables the speakerphone microphone and the speakerphone speaker when the speakerphone switch is operated a first time during the on-hook condition; (b) disables the speakerphone microphone when the speakerphone switch is operated a second time during the on-hook condition; and (c) reenables the speakerphone microphone when the speakerphone switch is operated a third time during the on-hook condition. The control mechanism may enable the headset microphone and the headset speaker in response to a change from the on-hook condition to the off-hook condition and then enable the speakerphone speaker when the speakerphone switch is operated a first time during the on-hook condition. Such a control mechanism desirably disables the headset microphone when the speakerphone switch is operated a second time during the off-hook condition and reenables the headset microphone when the speakerphone switch is operated a third time during the off-hook condition.
