    • The invention is based on a method for dissipating damaging overvoltages, a lightning current suppressor (1) and, arranged downstream of it, one or more overvoltage suppressors (2-4) initially being connected in series with one another in the path of the voltage wave. In order to be able to achieve correct coordination of the suppressors with respect to one another and with respect to the characteristics of the respective system as well as, in particular, with respect to the apparatus which is in each case to be protected, in a simple and safe (reliable) manner, it is provided that the output voltage (U1A) and the output current (I1A) of the lightning current suppressor (1) is matched to the maximum permissible input voltage (U2E) and to the maximum permissible input current (I2E) of the downstream, first overvoltage suppressor (2), that the output voltage (U2A) and the output current (I2A) of the first overvoltage suppressor is matched to the maximum permissible input voltage (U3E) and to the maximum permissible input current (I3E) of the subsequent, second overvoltage suppressor (if fitted) and so on, and that the output voltage (U4A) and the output current (I4A) of the last overvoltage suppressor (4) is matched to the maximum permissible input voltage (UEG) and to the maximum permissible input current (IEG) of the apparatus (G) to be protected, the output voltage or the output current of the upstream suppressor being selected to be either less than or equal to the input voltage and the input current of the downstream suppressor or of the apparatus (G) to be protected.
