    • A sample carrier comprising a top wall, a base, and a support wall joining the top wall and the base. The top wall includes aligned, spaced-apart openings on at least one side of the support wall which are sized to receive sample tubes. Sleeves depending from the top wall and circumscribing each opening direct sample tubes into sample tube holding areas. The sample tube holding areas each include one or more retaining walls extending upward from the base opposite the support wall. Springs extending outward from the support wall bias sample tubes against the retaining walls. A drip shield comprising a cover plate, a pair of through-holes for accessing sample tubes in the sample carrier, and a depending fin which separates sample tubes on opposite sides of the support wall protects against cross-contamination between sample tubes held by the sample carrier.

    • A gravity flow cassette for use with an I.V. infusion pump has a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet and a pump chamber with associated pump piston. A valve body having an annular groove and a partial groove parallel thereto is slidably disposed in the cassette for reciprocal movement between a first position and a second position. Engagement of the cassette with the pump firmly holds the valve body in the first position wherein the annular groove is sealed and the valve body can be rotated to alternately provide fluid communication through the partial groove between the inlet and the pump chamber or between the pump chamber and the outlet. Upon disengagement of the cassette from the pump, the valve body can be moved into the second position to seal the partial groove and provide for simultaneous fluid communication through the annular groove between the input, the output and the pump chamber.

    • A safety valve in combination with a resilient tube for preventing the free flow of fluid through the resilient tube comprises a valve body which is connected to a valve head of generally circular cross-section which is formed with a flat peripheral land. The resilient tube is disposed over the valve head for snug fluid-sealing engagement between the inner surface of the tube and the flat land on the valve head. Also, the resilient tube is fluid sealed to the valve body for fluid communication therebetween. Stretching the resilient tube separates a portion of the inner surface of the tube from the flat land on the valve head to permit fluid flow past the valve head. When the resilient tube is unstretched, the engagement between the inner surface of the tube and the flat land of the valve head prevents free fluid flow.

    • A three-way valve for automatic sequencing of fluid flow from a syringe into an IV administration set comprises a housing which forms a fluid chamber having a first and a second inlet and an outlet. A sleeve having a fluid passageway normally closed by a check valve is slidably disposed within the fluid chamber for reciprocal movement between a first position and a second position for respective fluid sealing engagement with the first and second inlets. With the sleeve in the second position, fluid flows through the chamber from the first inlet to the outlet. Engagement of a syringe with the second inlet urges the sleeve into the first position to permit fluid flow from the syringe into the second inlet and through the chamber to the outlet. Upon emptying of the syringe, the syringe plunger seals the second inlet and urges against a probe that opens the check valve to permit resumption of fluid flow from the first inlet to the outlet.
