    • An illumination light unit includes at least two light sources that generate light at different wavelengths. The illumination light unit also includes a reflecting cavity having one or more reflectors and a controlled transmission mirror disposed at an output of the reflecting cavity. The controlled transmission mirror includes an input coupling element, an output coupling element and a first multilayer reflector disposed between the input and output coupling elements. At least some of the light from the light sources is reflected within the reflecting cavity by the one or more reflectors and is mixed. Light passes out of the reflecting cavity through the controlled transmission mirror. The illumination light unit may be used for illumination purposes, or as part of a backlight for illuminating a display.

    • Transflectors are disclosed that include a body having a first surface and a second surface, the second surface being a structured surface that includes prismatic structures having first and second facets. The transflector body is configured so that, in a reflective mode, light incident onto the first surface at a reflected incident angle is refracted through the first surface, reflected at the first facet of a first prismatic structure, reflected at the second facet of a second prismatic structure, and refracted through the first surface with a maximum intensity at about a reflected exit angle. The transflector body is also configured so that, in a transmissive mode, light incident onto the second surface at a transmitted incident angle is directed by a prismatic structure to the first surface and refracted through the first surface with a maximum intensity at about a transmitted exit angle. Also disclosed are methods of making, as well as display devices incorporating such transflectors.
