    • According to one embodiment, an auto document feeding device comprises: a document placing section on which documents are placed; a first gate configured to divert the documents in a first direction or a second direction; a first conveying unit or a second conveying unit configured to lead the documents to the image scanning unit; a paper discharging and conveying unit configured to lead the documents from the image scanning unit in the direction of the paper discharge tray; a reversing roller configured to switch back the documents passed through the paper discharging and conveying unit; a reversing and conveying unit configured to convey the documents from the reversing roller to the first gate; and a second gate configured to divert the documents passed through the paper discharging and conveying unit to the reversing and conveying unit.

    • According to the embodiment, an automatic document feeder includes a first transport unit which transports a document fed from a document tray to a reading portion in a first direction after turning over the document, and a second transport unit which transports the document fed from the document tray to the reading portion in a second direction and transports the document passed through the reading portion to the reading portion in the first direction after turning over the document. When an image on one side of the document is read, the document is sorted to be transported to the first transport unit, and when images on both sides of the document are read, the document is sorted to be transported to the second transport unit.

    • According to an embodiment of the present invention, an image forming apparatus having an automatic document carrier device including a plurality of sensors arranged in a path where source documents to be read are carried; a plurality of motors configured to detect the positions of the source documents by these sensors and to carry the source documents at a predetermined speed; a cooling fan to be rotated to reduce the ambient temperature; a fan motor configured to drive the cooling fan; and a carrier control unit configured to control the plurality of sensors, the plurality of motors and the fan motor, wherein the carrier control unit detects passage of the source documents by any of the plurality of sensors, estimates a time when the source documents are discharged into the discharge tray, and stops the fan motor around the estimated time.

    • An automatic original feeding device includes a pick-up mechanism for picking up originals placed on a holding portion, a feed roller for feeding the picked-up original onto an original table of an image forming apparatus and delivering the fed original from the original table, and a discharge mechanism for discharging the delivered original to a discharge portion. The feed roller is arranged to be movable between a contact position where the feed roller is in contact with the original table so that the original can be delivered onto or from the original table, and an off position where the feed roller is separated from the original table. The feed roller is moved to the off position by a moving mechanism at the start of operation of the discharge mechanism.
