    • Disclosed herein is an improved, commercially viable and industrially advantageous process for the preparation of Irbesartan, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, in high yield and purity, which comprises: a) reacting 2-n-butyl-3-[[2'-cyanobiphenyl-4-yI]methyI]- 1,3-diazaspiro-[4.4]non-1 - en-4-one with an alkali metal azide and tri(C 1-4 )alkylamine hydrohalide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in a non-polar aprotic solvent to produce an alkaline salt of 2-n-butyl-3-[[2'-(tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]-1,3- diazasp?ro[4.4]non-1 -en-4-one; and b) neutralizing the alkaline salt of 2-n-butyl-3-[[2'-(tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4- yl]methyl]-1,3-diazaspiro[4.4]n on-1-en-4-one in aqueous medium with an acid to produce Irbesartan and optionally converting the Irbesartan obtained into its pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
