    • PURPOSE: A device and method for controlling a single phase induction motor are provided to reduce manufacturing costs by starting or operating a motor with a simple circuit including a switch without a PCT thermistor or an overload protection device. CONSTITUTION: Power is applied to a single phase induction motor through a main winding switch and a sub winding switch. A voltage applied to the single phase induction motor is detected(S120). A starting time is calculated based on the detected voltage(S130). If the starting time elapses(S150), the single phase induction motor operates by switching the main winding switch or sub winding switch(S161,S162).

A linear compressor comprises a frame, a cylinder, a power supply unit, a piston, and first and second propulsion parts(310,320,330). The cylinder is attached and supported to the frame. The piston reciprocates within the cylinder in first and second directions. The first propulsion part propels the piston in the first direction by using the power from the power supply unit.
