    • 661,986. Return-tube steam boilers. DANKS & CO. (OLDBURY), Ltd., E., and SMITH, J. March 31, 1950 [April 7, 1949], No. 9515/49. Class 123(ii) In a steam boiler comprising two sideby-side furnace flues 15, 17 each with an associated bank 51, 61 of return smoke tubes 25 disposed mainly or wholly above the level of said flues, the smoke tubes in the rows 51d-51h and 61d-61h adjacent to the vertical planes through the axis of the flues are smallerin diameter than the tubes in the remaining rows so as to secure a closer approximation to equality between the gas velocities through all the said tubes. The invention is also applicable to a boiler with a single furnace flue. Moreover, in the actual construction shown, the tubes in the rows 51i-51k and 61i-61k at the adjacent inner sides of the two banks are smaller than those in the rows 51a, 51b and 61a, 61b at the opposite outer sides. Preferably all the tubes taper convergently from their inlet to outlet ends to afford more even velocities of gas flow therethrough.

    • 380,236. Slicing-machines. AUTOMATIC SCALE CO., Ltd. and SMITH. J., Broadheath, Altrincham, Cheshire. Aug. 26, 1931, No. 23970. [Class 28 (ii).] In a slicing-machine clamp of the kind wherein a sleeve member 2 is slidable on a post or posts 3 at one side of the meat table and the clamping-bar 6 is pivotally attached thereto, the pivot connection comprises a pin 5 projecting from the member 2 and the angular position of the bar 6 is controlled by a ratchet or other toothed wheel 7 revoluble on the pin 5 and connected with a non-reversing mechanism 8 which prevents upward angular movement of the bar 6 when the bar is locked to the toothed wheel 7 by a pawl 9 controlled by a handle 11 at the free end of the bar 6. The one-way device 8 may be of the spring- pressed wedging balls type and, as shown, consists of a disc 20 secured to the wheel 7, and having peripheral notches for the reception of the balls. The disc is encircled by, and the balls wedge against, the recessed wall 19 of an enlargement 17 of the sleeve member 2, which together with an enlargement 16 at the end of the bar 6, forms a housing for the gear 7, 8. The pawl 9 is normally pressed into engagement with the wheel 7 by a spring 13.
