摘要： PURPOSE:To produce a filter medium having hardness, higher specific gravity than that of anthracite and large surface area by heat treating natural zeolite. CONSTITUTION:By heat treating natural zeolite at 300-1200 deg.C the ion exchange capacity is remarkably deteriorated, yet hardness and large surface area are provided. The abrasion rate of the heat treated zeolite is below about 1%, and the true specific gravity 1.78-1.92. Accordingly, the water permeation LV of a filter can be raised, and hence the filter cost can be reduced. The amt. of SS captured per unit vol. is increased to elongate the filtration-sustaining time. Since the zeolite has high specific gravity, double filtration is enabled using the zeolite and sand.

CONSTITUTION:Mordenite or chabazite type natural zeolite is pulverized and treated with a mixed aqueous soln. contg. 0.005-1.5mol/l aminocarboxylic acid type chelating agent and 0.05-3.5mole/l water soluble salt of a univalent metal such as chloride, sulfate or nitrate of Na or Li. The metallic salt and the chelating agent remaining in the zeolite are removed by washing, and the zeolite is dried at about 100 deg.C and activated by heating at about 320-650 deg.C which is below the thermal decomposition temp. of zeolite. A molded body having superior selective adsorbing power and suitable for the purification or concentration of gaseous oxygen and nitrogen is obtd.

The higher the quality is, the more excellent the adsorption capacity is. Even natural mordenite, whose content of iron is approximate not more than 10wt% in conversion value to Fe2O3, can be provided with adsorption capacity equal to or higher than the molecular sieve. Thus, cheap zeolite with proper grades can be selected in response to the kinds of gases to be adsorbed and adsorptive degrees.
