[Classes 78 (iii), 78 (v), 104 (ii) and 105] Relates to control means for hoists such as lift cages or haulage trucks of the kind in which control movements are transmitted from the hoist to a remote control lever for starting and stopping the winding gear by means of a cable which extends along the whole length of travel of the hoist and has running engagement with a device on the hoist which can be operated manually to alter the effective length of the cable by producing a kink or bend in the cable and thus operate the remote control lever in any position of the hoist. According to the invention, the control handle on the hoist is coupled to the part having running engagement with the cable through a clutch controlled by a trip mechanism which is operated automatically when the hoist over-runs a pre-determined extreme limit of travel to disengage the clutch so that the operator loses control and the remote control lever is then moved by a spring or weight to a position for stopping the winding gear to bring the hoist automatically to rest. In the form shown applied to a lift cage, the control cable 1, fixed at one'end and connected at the other to a weighted lever 7 controlling the winding gear, engages between pulleys 8 on a plate 3 pivotally mounted in the cage. To effect movement of the cage, the plate 3 is rotated through 90 degrees by means of the hand lever 14 and held in this position by the operator. This movement of the plate 3 effects a kink in the cable and raises the control lever 7 to a position in which it causes engagement of a driving clutch. The plate 3 is mounted on a shaft 11 connected with the handle 14 through a friction clutch comprising a disc 15 freely mounted on the shaft 11, and a disc 16 slidably mounted on the shaft and coupled thereto by a feather. The clutch is controlled by a toggle comprising pairs of links 29, 30, the links 30 having lateral extensions which are united at 36 and coupled to an operating lever 37 by a pin- and-slot connection 38, 39. Should the operator not release the handle 14 when the cage reaches its upper or lower extreme limits, a fixed stop 46, Fig. 6, in the well engages a trip lever 43 so as to rock an arm 42 on the shaft 41 of the toggle operating lever and break the toggle. This releases the clutch disc 16 and disconnects the handle 14 from the shaft 11. The control lever 7 is then returned to the stop position by its weight 10 and the cage brought to rest. The handle 14 is connected to the disc 15 by a spring-pressed plunger 21 which engages teeth 22 on the disc, the plunger being controlled by a grip lever 24. In a modified arrangement of trip mechanism for use at the bottom of the lift well, the stop member is mounted so that it can rock in an upward direction to a limited extent.
