    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an arc discharge lamp in which conventional faults are eliminated, a reinforcement member for supporting a light emission tube assembly is improved with an economical method, and the miss alignment of the light emission assembly from the longitudinal axis of the lamp is prevented.
      SOLUTION: The arc discharge lamp includes a light emission tube having a inner vacant body, an electrode extending to the inner vacant body. The electrode and the inner vacant body are arranged along the longitudinal axis. The light emission tube is surrounded by a shroud. The shroud and light emission tube forms an assembly. The light emission tube assembly is surrounded by a lamp cover. The cover has a mouthpiece having a cylindrical part. An electrical lead passing through the mouthpiece is connected to the light emission tube electrode. When a vertical force is applied to the arc discharge lamp, the miss alignment of the light emission assembly from the longitudinal axis is prevented by the reinforce member. The reinforce member has an extending element having a first end portion and a second end portion. The first end portion is formed to be combined with the light emission assembly. The second end portion is formed to be combined with the mouthpiece of the arc lamp.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ballast in which filaments are properly preheated prior to lamp ignition, in which small or no power is consumed on filament heating during the normal operation of the lamps and in which required circuit constitution may be realized in simple, convenient, and low-cost manner. SOLUTION: In the ballast, a filament heating and lighting control circuit is operaed to control an inverter and a resonant output circuit so that (a) during a preheating phase, the resonant output circuit has (i) an effective resonance capacity corresponding to a first resonant frequency, and performs (ii) heating of a first level to first and second lamp filaments, (b) during a normal operating phase after the preheating phase, the resonant output circuit has (i) an effective resonance capacity corresponding to the second resonant frequency, and actuates so that (ii) heating of a second is performed to the first and second lamp filaments of a gas discharge lamp wherein the heating of a second is small in capacity in comparison with the heating of a first level.
