[Class 83 (iv)] A draw-bench carriage is provided with means for cushioning the end of the return stroke and for ensuring that the tongs grip the work securely at the start of the next drawing operation. A roller 7 on the carriage engages the slotted end of a lever 1 pivoted at 3, towards the end of the return stroke. The lever is linked to a cross-head 10 on the rod 12 of a piston 13. Escape of air from behind the piston is controlled by an adjustable needle valve 15 according to the amount of cushioning desired. During movement of the lever 1, an adjustable cam 16 on it operates a lever, allowing an exhaust valve 18 for the other end of the cylinder 14 to close and opening a pressure supply valve 19. Pressure air does not, however, pass until a treadle-operated valve 24 is also opened. The carriage comes to rest with the lever 1 resting against a spring buffer 22, and the valve 24 is now operated, admitting air at 25 to means for pushing forward a new tube and mandrel so that the tag end passes through the die. At the same time pressure behind the piston 13 forces the lever 1 and consequently the carriage further back towards the die, compressing the buffer spring and bringing the trip rod 26 for the hook into contact with a stop 27, thereby permitting the hook to engage the chain. The drawing stroke of the carriage commences against the resistance of the lever 1 due to the air pressure in. the cylinder 14 and this ensures that the tongs take an immediate grip upon the tube. The carriage is constructed as described in Specification 572,429.

[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for handling metal sheets &c., e.g. in rolling mills, comprises an endless band conveyer 1 driven by a motor 8 and disposed to receive the sheets on emergence from between a pair of pinch rolls 2, 3. Located on each side of the conveyer 1 are means for raising the sheets to an elevated inclined position from which they ride down by gravity to reach a set of supporting rollers 16 forming a platform 15. An adjustable stop 17 determines the final position of the sheets, which can be raised manually by the operator from the platform 15 and re-inserted in the rolls 2, 3 or otherwise disposed of. The elevating and tilting means consist of two pairs 10 of endless chains, arranged on each side of the conveyer 1 with one pair, of full height, at the head of the machine and the other pair, of less height, toward the roll end of the machine. The chains 10 pass round pinions 11 so that each chain follows a closed vertical path at one side and end of the conveyer 1, the plane of each path being at right angles to the length of the conveyer. The chains 10 are furnished with outstanding brackets which support beams 13 running lengthwise of the conveyer 1 and furnished with anti-friction rollers 14. The four bottom sets of pinions 11 are driven at uniform speed by an electric motor with gearing and shafting 22 so that the beams 13, after having been raised horizontally till they reach the level of the top of the lower pair of chains 10, continue to be raised at their head end and so assume an inclined disposition which permits the sheets to slide. The apparatus may be set in motion either by operator control or automatically, and stops may be provided to prevent undesired movement of the sheets while being raised:

[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A die for the extruding or drawing of material with a polygonal cross-section comprises a body enclosing a plurality of plates 8 slidably arranged edge to edge, the two edges .9, 10 of each plate which abut on the adjoining plates, defining an acuteangle between them and one of said edges serving as one side of a polygonal area 12 of the desired shape, the plates being adjustable in a rotary sense about the axis of the die for moving the plates relatively to one another to vary the size of the die opening. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the plates are mounted within a body comprising a back 1, a ring 3 and a front cover 2 bolted together by - bolts 4. The ring 3 has six internal surfaces 5 through which project adjusting or guide screws 7 for the plates. Adjustment of the plates to vary the size of the die opening 12 is effected by means of screws 20. The plates may be clamped by means of bolts 14 passing through slots 15 and 16 in the back and front portions 1 and 2 and through slots 13 in the plates 8. In a modified form, Fig. 3, the cover portion 2 is angularly adjustable for effecting the movement of the plates. Pins 24 screwed into the cover 2 pass through slots 25 in the plates and into sliding collars which run in arc-shaped grooves in the back portion 1. The cover 2 is rotated by means of a hand wheel 33 and worm. 30. The working edges of the plates are provided with hard metal facings 22 secured by screws 23.

A casting-machine for light metal castings, wherein the metal dies 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 forming the mould are moved towards and away from each other mechanically, comprises means for passing cooling liquid through the dies. The machine is controlled automatically by a control system as in Specification 744,053 and, in casting aluminium pistons, the side dies 3, together with their associated top dies 4, are moved over the bed 1 of the machine by hydraulic cylinders and are guided by rails. The outer core-dies 10 are then moved apart and the inner core-die 9 introduced between them by a hydraulic cylinder, the carriages for the dies 10 being connected with the die 9. The dies 6 for the gudgeon-pin bore are next inserted in the dies 3 to complete the assembly, to which cooling- water is then introduced under control of an electronic timer started automatically and operating electromagnetic valves to start and stop the coolant. The timer may be operated direct from a uni-selector switch 21 (Fig. 2, not shown) or through a pyrometer in one of the dies, as in Specification 744,053, the pyrometer also starting an electronic.. timer which opens the dies after the casting operation. The water circulates through tubes .7, 11 in the dies 6, 9 and returns around the outside of the tubes, through tubes 14, 15 supplying chambers 13 in the dies 4, and through passages 17, 8 in the dies 3 and tubes connected to the passages 8 and leading from the dies 3 to enable the flow to be observed. The metal is poured by hand through an inlet 19 eccentric of the mould, the walls of the cooling-chambers of which are profiled to provide a roughly uniform rate of cooling over the whole casting, and the supply of water is controlled to provide the same degree of cooling for each casting. The Provisional Specification also refers to levers with ballshaped formations for opening the mould, and to a connection between the cooling-chambers in the gudgeon-pin-bore dies and those in the side dies.

    • 554,145. Controlling filtering processes. NORTHERN ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., and HORSBURGH, W. W. Feb. 7, 1942, No. 1640. [Class 46] [Also in Groups XXIX, III and XXVIII] A device for use in controlling a process in which the rate of variation of an essential factor varies with time, comprises two elements moved at right angles to one another one at constant velocity and the other at a velocity varying with the rate of variation of the essential factor, a member moved by the elements, and means actuated by a change in the direction of movement of said member for exerting control or giving a signal. Examples of processes to which the invention is applicable are those comprising mass action, filtration or distillation, and those in which one function is asymptotic to another. The apparatus shown with the parts in their initial positions comprises blocks 2, 4 and a member 1 which is pivotally connected to the blocks and is also slidable with respect to the block 4. During filtration, the block 4 is moved to the left by a cord 7, drum 8a, and clockwork, and the member 2 is raised by a rod 6 connected to a float in the filtrate receiving chamber, thus causing a weighted block 12 to be raised, pawls 15 on the block slipping over ratchet teeth on a bar 17 pivoted to a counterbalanced lever 19. When the delivery rate of the filtrate falls off, the direction of movement of the member 1 is reversed, the bar 17 is moved down, a trigger 21 is moved, and the weighted bell crank lever 24 swings the bar 17 to operate a valve 29, or other means, e.g. an electric relay, to cause a signal to be given or filtration to be stopped.
