    • A glassy carbon prepared by hardening a phenolic resin by heating and firing the hardened phenolic resin in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, characterized in that the phenolic resin is a 40 to 80 % by weight solution of a phenolic resin having a number-average molecular weight of 300 to 500 in a hydrophilic organic solvent; and a process for the preparation of a glassy carbon by hardening a phenolic resin by heating and firing the hardened phenolic resin in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, characterized in that the phenolic resin is a 40 to 80 % by weight solution of a phenolic resin having a number-average molecular weight of 300 to 500 in a hydrophilic organic solvent. The surface and mass of the glassy carbon is free from any defect, so that no gas remains within the glassy carbon. When the glassy carbon is used as the base for magnetic recording media or the electrode plate for plasma etching, it is therefore out of danger of bringing about a non-uniform magnetic recording layer or of generating fine dusts.
