    • Systems and methods are described that facilitate calibrating a print engine using calibration data sets generated at at least two different L* levels to provide additional calibration measurement resolution toward the darker end of the grayscale spectrum. For instance a first, light grey (e.g., 70-90L*) calibration strip is scanned at a first resolution (e.g., 70-90L*) to generate a first calibration data set, and a second darker grey (e.g., 30-50L*) calibration strip is scanned at high resolution (e.g., 100L*) to generate a second calibration data set. The first calibration data set is used to calibrate the print engine for high L* values (e.g., 50-100) and the second calibration data set is used to calibrate the print engine for low L* values (e.g., 0-50). Alternatively, a single calibration strip having a known L* value can be scanned once at the known L* value and again at a higher L* value (e.g., 100L*) to generate two calibration data sets, which are used to improve calibration resolution in the darker part of the spectrum.

    • System and methods providing image reading devices having rated throughput capacity substantially equal to half of the rated throughput capacity of the associated printer module. The system includes a plurality of image reading devices, associated buffer storage devices, and a printer module arranged in a fashion allowing for maintaining throughput capacity while reducing overall costs. The image reading devices have individual rated throughput capacities that are substantially equal to half the rated throughput capacity of the printer module in duplex. The output from the image reading devices are loaded into buffer storage devices, from which the printer module is sequentially loaded from the buffer storage devices. The buffer storage devices allow for downgrading the rated throughput capacity of at least some of the image reading devices to approximately half of the associated printer module, thus, allowing for reduced manufacturing and operating costs, and advantageously using commercially available units.

    • Methods and systems for simultaneous local and contextual display comprise displaying a smaller, “local” image on a first surface using a first device having limited screen real estate. A second, larger, “contextual” image is simultaneously displayed on a larger second surface, which may comprise a projector screen or a separate computer monitor screen. The contextual image may be projected onto the second surface using the first device, or the first device may be coupled to a second device for displaying the contextual image. The local image comprises a subset of the contextual image such that a user may view both the fine detail of the local image using the first device and the context of the local image within the contextual image on the second surface.

    • Systems and methods are described that facilitate removing punch hole artifacts in electronic document images. When a document with punch holes is scanned, the punch holes appear as unwanted dark spots in the margin. To remove these artifacts, a blanking regions having background color pixels are placed over the punch hole artifacts and the electronic document image is stored with the blanking regions in place. A user interface is provided to permit a user to enter blanking region parameters, including x,y coordinates, diameter, reference edge from which the coordinates are measured, etc. Default settings can be stored and recalled for common punch hole patterns, which may vary between offices and the like.

    • An fiber optic imaging device utilizing fiber optics for imaging portions of documents of varying shapes and/or sizes. For example, for imaging a book or any document having a centerfold, where the document will not lay flat (non-planar) against the platen of the image forming device. The device may be shaped to fit in the centerfold of an open document between the platen of the copying device and the document. Additionally, the fiber optic imaging device may also allow for performing a geometric translation based upon a portion of the document, for facilitating document reproduction.
