    • A food masher (2) comprises a mashing plate (4), apertures (6) in the mashing plate, and a handle (8) which upstands from a first side (10) of the mashing plate (4) and which comprises a hand grip portion (12) and a shank (14) and the food masher (2) being such that the handle (8) is able to flex with respect to the mashing plate (4) without substantial loss of food mashing pressure. The food masher may include a flexible portion positioned at the end of the shank remote from the handle grip portion. The flexible portion may be made of flexible material, the remainder of the shank being made of rigid material. Alternatively the flexible portion may be a part of the shank which is of smaller cross sectional area the parts of the shank adjacent to flexible portion. Still further the flexible means may be a mechanical joint such a hinged or ball joint positioned between the first side of the mashing plate and an end of the shank remote from the hand grip portion.

    • A monitoring unit (9) and a method for monitoring the lung and/or bronchial tract conditions of a patient, wherein patient data pertaining to a particular patient is stored in a patient data storage means (5), whereby, upon reception of an inhaled or exhaled breath of a patient via a mouthpiece (1) onto a transducer means (12), the data therefor is processed (4) to calculate the lung and/or bronchial tract condition of a patient and compared to the patient data, such that the condition of a patient may be displayed to an operator via display means (15, 16). The unit may be embodied as a personal spirometer unit (9) or as a composite master system with a plurality of personal spirometer units wherein a plurality of discrete data information is stored and may be transferred to the master system by suitable interface means for further processing.
