    • In a storage system having a plurality of virtualization apparatuses that allocate a storage area which a storage device has, form a plurality of virtual volumes, and process input-output from a host processor to one of the virtual volumes, a request for completing all the input-output being processed that is received from the host processor and temporarily holding the input-output processing received subsequently is issued to the plurality of virtualization apparatuses, when a completion report of the processing of the input-output in response to the request is received from the plurality of virtualization apparatuses and the completion report is received from all the virtualization apparatuses to which the request was issued, an instruction of an allocation change of the storage area of the storage device is sent to all the virtualization apparatuses, and when the completion report of the allocation change is received from all the virtualization apparatuses, the storage area of the storage device is allocated to the virtual volume by sending an instruction for releasing a state of the input-output held temporarily to all the virtualization apparatuses.

In the case of allocating a vacant storage region from storage regions of a storage device to a virtualized volume, the virtualization function repeats to acquire and allocate a storage region from the vacant storage region until a remaining size within a required size becomes smaller than a maximum region size and, below the maximum region size, acquires and allocates a storage region, whose size is the smallest power of two not smaller than the remaining size, from the vacant storage region. If the vacant storage region includes a plurality of continuous vacant regions, the virtualization function selects the largest continuous vacant region for allocation.

    • In a system where a storage device is coupled to a computer, a storage area in the storage device is efficiently allocated to the computer. The system comprises a virtualization apparatus to be coupled to the computer and a plurality of storage devices to be coupled to the virtualization apparatus. The virtualization apparatus, responding to a request from the computer, issues a notice to the effect that a predetermined size of virtual volume has been allocated to the computer. The virtualization apparatus, upon receiving an access request from the computer to the virtual volume, allocates storage areas existing in a plurality of storage devices to the virtual volume, converts the access request received from the computer to an access request addressed to a storage device having the storage devices allocated to the virtual volume, and transmits the converted access request to the storage device.
