    • 16,573. Williams, J. N. July 24, 1912, [Convention date]. Motor - wheels. - A wheel of the suspension type encloses an independent revolving-cylinder motor, which drives the wheel through a clutch and reducing- gearing. Fig. 2 shows an axial section of the motor wheel as applied to a bicycle, and Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of the motor. Three cylinders I, II, III arc bolted to a crank casing 1 which turns upon a crank-shaft 2 fixed in the forks 3. The separated and independent spoke flanges 35, 40 are mounted upon and held apart by thrust bearings 36, 42, so as to maintain the tension of the spokes 37 and the rigidity of the wheel. The rotation of the crank case is transmitted to the wheel through toothed gearing and a clutch on the non-rotating stud 19. The clutch surfaces consist of cone - shaped annular projections and grooves, and are operated by axial movement of the stud 19. The exhaust valves 10 in the cylinder head are operated by levers 11, 52, a link 13 and cams 51 geared to the crank casing by means of epicyclic gearing 46, 47. A cap 8 secured to the cylinder head forms an exhaust chamber, the exhaust escaping through holes 6. Electric current for the ignition is transmitted from the wire 56 through an insulated segment 55 and contact 58.

    • 11,880. Moore, J. N. B. June 6. Spring wheels; spokes; felloes or rims.-Wheels for motor-cars, carriages, and other vehicles are constructed with two parallel, flat rings a, Figs. 1 and 2, between which fit tread-blocks c of wood or other material pressed outwards by a pneumatic or other resilient cushion n resting on a free ring o. Separating the blocks are wedgeshaped bridge-pieces d attached to the side rings by lugs e fitting into slots f and by screws g. The side rings are connected to the hub p by spokes l fitted with tightening-devices m. In a modification, a disk wheel is made by stamping the side rings, spokes, and boss p , Fig. 7, from one sheet of metal, the disks being connected by transverse bolts s. Recesses e , strengthened by angle-pieces b , are stamped in the plates, and the bridge-pieces and tread-blocks are formed with shoulders to correspond ; two or more cushions n side by side may be used. In another form, each side ring is cast with a series of lugs d , Fig. 9, which, being connected by transverse bolts a , form bridge-pieces. In other modifications, two or four wire rings r, Fig. 10, of circular or oval cross-section replace the side rings, and the spokes pass through or round the bridge-pieces, which are formed with lugs e to keep the wire rings in position.

    • A machinery operation involves the steps: 1) inputting into a computer statistical past-performance information representing, in relation to each job, the speed at which the machine was run, together with run length of the job, and optionally at least one or more of a) information representing the difficulty of the job; b) information representing the operator in relation to the job; c) information representing the machine utilised; d) information representing the utilisation pressure existing at the time the job was carried out; 2) feeding corresponding information representing a job to be performed into the computer; and 3) causing the computer to calculate an optimum run rate for the job to be performed, and using an equation of the general formula y = f[1-e ]. The calculated or optimum run rate may be used to determine the probable length of time a particular job is likely to take, or may be utilised to indicate to the operator the most appropriate speed at which the machine should be run, or both.
