    • 268,488. Batten, J. D. Feb. 2, 1926. Ornithopters; propelling; land wheels and skids; shock-absorbers, applications of; floats, arrangement of.-Flapping wing machines. as described in Specification 237,094 wherein the wing spars are downwardly inflected by torses of silk or other tensile substance, have landing carriages on levers connected to the wing spars in such a manner that the same relative movement is given to the wings and the machine when earth or water supported as when air supported. Fig. V shows in side view a machine having wing spars inflected bv silk torses carried in steel and wood bow shaped frames stayed by vertical rods. The land wheels are carried by the parallel linkage shown and the inboard end of the linkage is arranged directly below the inner ends of the wing sparts or of a bar connecting them on each side of the machine and is connected thereto by leather thongs. The outboard length of the linkage is equal to the distance of the centre of pressure of the wings from their pivots and the inboard end is equal in length to the inboard length of the wing spars. Torses may be arranged alsc at the points b. A similar linkage may support the rear of the machine or a simple skid may extend rearwardly. For alighting on water floats are carried on similar linkages but extending laterally beneath the wings as shown in Fig. IX the floats being rotarily mounted on fore and aft axes. A rearwardly extending spar carrying another float is pivoted to the machine and connected by a thong to a transverse bar spanning the inner ends of the wing levers. The landing devices droop during flight leaving the leather thongs slack.

    • 11,049. Lamb, M. C., and Rennie, J. D, G. May 26. Printing leather.-Leather is printed in coloured patterns and without obscuring the grain, by using thecoal-tar and natural dyes ordinarily employed for dyeing or staining leather. For ordinary printing, solutions in water, alcohol, benzine, or other hydrocarbon, are used. Mucilaginous thickening, such as gelatine, gum tragacanth, carrageen, linseed, farina, starches, soaps, alginates, or sulphated oils, may be added, using the minimum proportion, so as not to obscure the grain or retard the penetration of the dye. In the case of natural dyes, the mordant is mixed with the dye, or is applied to the leather before printing. For example, to obtain black on a pale maroon or violet ground, the ground is obtained by aqueous solution of logwood extract and aluminium sulphate, and the print is made in ink containing water, farina, ferrous sulphate, glycerine, linseed oil, and commercial iron nitrate. For discharge printing, a ground, for example, fast red, is formed by dyeing, and a print is made with a thickened solution of hydrosulphate of soda. For resist printing, a print is made with a paste of superfatted soap or wax, and then the leather is dyed or stained as usual ; multicolour effects may be obtained by alternate printings and dyeings. Printing from stencil plates is mentioned in the Provisional Specification.

    • A power saving archive system includes a front storage system accessible by clients and one or more back storage systems connected to the front storage system. A client file received by the front storage system is written to one of the back storage systems, while the front storage system stores a reference to the file and deletes the file from the front storage system after a certain time period. Each back storage system enters an inactive state (e.g. a powered off state) after a period of unuse, and can become active again in response to a wakeup command (e.g. a Wake-on-LAN signal) from the front storage system. Upon receiving a file read request from a client, the front storage system wakes up the appropriate back storage system, restores the file from the back storage system, and provides the file to the client.

    • A computing device having a unique form factor and adapted for connecting to an external device is described. The computing device includes external connector(s), computing node(s), a power unit, and a flexible enclosure structure encasing them. The enclosure structure is made of flexible materials so that the computing device forms a physically integrated unit free of a rigid frame and can be mechanically supported by its external connectors without a chassis. At least one computing node has a computing state machine and programs that controls the behavior of the computing nodes at least during a connection event and a disconnection event. The computing device can be hot-swapped and function properly between these events. Also described is a reconfigurable computing system that includes one or more computing devices described above and one or more host computers, as well as programming techniques for accomplishing hot swapping of the computing devices.
