摘要： A surface-modified activated carbon is provided to reduce the amount of free fine carbon particles among the activated carbon. By surface-modifying the activated carbon with a layer, the activated carbon can have increased mechanical strength and the fine carbon particles among the activated carbon can be fastened to the layer. Therefore, the layer allows for the level of free fine carbon particles among the activated carbon to be reduced. Surface-modified activated carbon can be used in smoking articles so as to allow for adsorption by the activated carbon with reduced free fine carbon particles in the smoking article and the smoke produced.

The composite material is capable of removing at least one constituent from tobacco smoke, preferably selectively. The composite material may also be used for removing at least one constituent from tobacco smoke through sorption and/or catalysis. The composite material comprises channels interconnecting at least one mesoporous region and at least one microporous region. The mesopores of the composite material may further comprise a carbon lining and/or be further functionalized with a surfactant. Alternatively, the composite material may further comprise a metal, a metal oxide, or mixtures thereof.

摘要： A smoking article such as a cigarette comprises a tobacco rod and a filter component having a cavity filled with spherical beaded carbon. As mainstream tobacco smoke is drawn through the filter component, targeted gas phase smoke constituents are removed as the smoke passes through the carbon. During the filter manufacturing process the spherical beaded carbon flows like a liquid and substantially completely fills the cavity. Point-to-point contact between the spherical beads together with substantially complete filling of the cavity produces minimal channeling of ambulatory gas phase as well as maximum contact between the gas phase and the carbon surface of the spherical beads during smoking.

A preferred flavorant is menthol. The encapsulated flavorants are prepared by mixing at least one flavorant with polyvinyl acetate and a solvent, such as ethanol, and forming the encapsulated flavorants. Methods of making cigarettes and smoking the articles are also provided.

In an exemplary case, a cigarette filter element comprises the substrate, which can be an imidazole-functionalized silica gel or an activated carbon of high surface area and permeability, and the gas stream is the mainstream smoke of a cigarette.

摘要： Cut filler compositions, smoking articles such as cigarettes, methods for making cigarettes and methods for treating cigarette smoke are provided, which involve the use of metal-containing nanowires. The metal-containing nanowires are capable of removing at least one constituent from tobacco smoke, preferably in a selective manner. The metal-containing nanowires may comprise any suitable metal, metal oxide or mixtures thereof. For example, the metal-containing nanowires comprise at least one transition or lanthanide metal or metal oxide thereof. Exemplary metals or metal oxides thereof include, but are not limited to, iron, copper, zinc, titanium, vanadium, palladium, cobalt, molybdenum and manganese. The metal-containing nanowires may be produced by (i) loading at least one metal-containing composition into a mesoporous molecular sieve substrate via repeated incipient-wetness impregnation followed by stepwise calcination to form said nanowires; and (ii) isolating the nanowires by extracting the mesoporous molecular sieve substrate, e.g., with aqueous NaOH.

摘要： A composite for use in smoking articles such as cigarettes is described comprising a zeolite membrane coated upon an activated carbon-containing substrate. The substrate may be a fiber, fabric, particle, granule or monolith. The composite is prepared by contacting zeolite precursors with the substrate and hydrothermally synthesizing the membrane upon the substrate. The substrate may be pretreated to provide activation sites for adhesion and growth of the membrane. By selection of the zeolite components, the composite may be tailored to selectively remove constituents of tobacco smoke while simultaneously controlling access to the substrate thereby prolonging the shelf life of the activated carbons.
