摘要： In a process for preparing a base for a coating or adhesive composition according to Specification 600,763, the non-heat-reactive phenol aldehyde resin contains up to 20 per cent of a heat-reactive phenol aldehyde resin (both resins being prepared from a phenol having an aliphatic substituent of at least 3 carbon atoms in the para-position), and the rubber is first blended with a major proportion of the nonheat-reaction resin containing all the heat-reactive resin, the blend being then incorporated in a heated solution of the remainder of the phenolic resin in the drying oil and the whole then being heated until the cooled mass has a desired consistency. In the example, rubber reclaim is blended with an acid catalysed nonheat-reactive resin and a heat-reactive resin both prepared from p-tertiary amyl phenol, the resins being added gradually to the rubber on a roller mill. The product is sheeted, broken up and treated with talc or soap solution to prevent sticking. The remainder of the nonheat-reactive resin is dissolved in dehydrated castor oil at about 270 DEG F., the rubber-resin blend added and the whole heated at about 500 DEG F. with stirring. The mass is then cooled to about 300 DEG F. dissolved in xylene, a portion of the solution worked up with titanium dioxide, blanc-fixe and china clay in a mill to a putty-like mass. The balance of the solution is added together with a xylene solution of cobalt naphthenate and manganese naphthenate, and wood flour is incorporated into the mass.

摘要： A composition for use as a coating or coldsetting and/or air-drying adhesive, which will adhere to the surface of moulded synthetic resins and to metals, especially steel, is made by heating together rubber (raw or reclaimed), an acid catalysed phenol-aldehyde resin from a phenol with an aliphatic substituent of at least three carbon atoms, and a drying oil containing a conjugated double bond preferably tung oil or dehydrated castor oil above 120 poises viscosity (oiticica and dehydrated castor oil of viscosity below 120 poises give rise to very soft products), in proportions 3 : 4 : 4 by weight. The temperature and duration of heating must be less than that which will pre-oxidize or pre-polymerize the oil to a stage at which it becomes incompatible with rubber. Examples describe the preparation of cement bases prepared (1) from a resin derived from p-tertiary amyl phenol, raw tung oil, and rubber, and (2) from a resin derived from p-tertiary butyl phenol, raw tung oil, and rubber. Cements are prepared from each of these bases by compounding with xylene, zinc oxide, cobalt naphthenate and wood flour added in succession.
