    • 285,721. Newton, Chambers, & Co., Ltd., and Hurst J. E. July 15, 1927. Casting processes; casting-machines. - Castiron cylindrical castings, such as cylinder liners for internal-combustion engines and piston valve liners for locomotives, are made by the centrifugal process, the silicon content of the metal being adjusted and the casting being rapidly cooled from a temperature almost immediately below its solidification point by means of an air blast, moistened or otherwise, applied to the inner surface, so as to obtain a sorbitic structure in order to render the article more resistant to wear, impact and volume changes on heating and to increase its tensile strength. The blast mav be cut off when the desired structure is obtained or may be continued until the casting is cool. The proportion of silicon is kept low so as to aid in obtaining this structure and is dependent on the average thickness of the casting and on the thermal conductivity and temperature of the mould material. When making a casting from a quarter of an inch to three inches in thickness in a rotating metal mould, the percentage of silicon varies from 2.25 to 1.25, and for casting in a sand or loam mould from 1.5 to 0.5. In casting a cylinder of one inch thickness in a rotating sand or like mould 1 to 1.25 per cent of silicon is used, an air blast of from 20 to 60 pounds pressure is introduced through a valvecontrolled nozzle until the casting has cooled from the solidification point to between 700‹ C and 760‹ C. For thicker castings and for castings containing more silicon or produced in hot metal moulds, the air blast may be moistened with water or oil, such as a light mineral oil, e.g., by using an injector nozzle, so as to effect a quicker cooling.
