    • 1,037,459. Assembling barrels. WILLIAM GRANT & SONS Ltd. June 9, 1965 [June 30, 1964]. No. 26941/64. Heading B8D. Casks are assembled in apparatus comprising a cradle 4 which is vertically adjustable and rotatable, end plates 3 movable inwards on rails 2 by means of ram mechanism 7, and a clamping band 10, 13, Fig. 4 (not shown), the lower half 10 of which is placed in the cradle 4 before the staves forming the lower part of the cask are placed in position within the cradle. The end plates 3 carry curved ledges 11, on which the staves of the upper part of the cask are supported, and guides 12 for holding the intermediate staves in position. The part 13 of the clamping band is then applied and engaged at its ends, with the part 10 of the band. Overlapping portions of the part 13 of the band are tightened by means of a device 18. The rams 7 withdraw the end plates 3, and the cradle 4 is rotated through 90 degrees by means of a turn-table 6. Cables 19, Fig. 2 (not shown), are looped round the ends of the staves and tightened by means of rams 21 to draw the stave ends together and allow truss hoops to be applied. The cables 19 are then slackened and the cradle returned to its initial position, where the plates 3 are used to press the hoops further on to the cask by means of members 22, Fig. 5 (not shown), carried by the plates 3. The part 13 of the clamp is unfastened, the plates 3 are withdrawn, and the cask is again turned through 90 degrees, enabling it to be removed to further apparatus (not shown) comprising steaming heads for softening and swelling the wood. The croze is machine cut at each end of the cask, head pieces are fitted, the truss hoops are removed, and normal hoops are fitted in their place. The upper part of the clamp may be suspended by means of a cable from pulleys supported above the apparatus, the opposite end of the cable carrying a counterweight 28 (see drawing with Complete Specification). The clamp may be tightened by hydraulic means 30-32.
