    • The invention comprises devices and methods for processing multimedia data. Such methods can include obtaining at least one metric indicative of a difference for a selected frame and adjacent frames in a plurality of video frames, the metric comprising bi-directional motion information and luminance difference information, determining a shot event in the selected frame based on the at least one metric, and adaptively encoding the selected frame based on the shot event. An apparatus for processing a multimedia data can include a motion compensator configured to obtain metrics indicative of a difference between adjacent frames of a plurality of video frames, said metrics comprising bi-directional motion information and luminance information, a shot classifier configured to determine a shot event in the plurality of video frames based on said metrics, and an encoder configured to adaptively encode the plurality of frames based on the shot event.

    • Systems and methods achieve higher spectral efficiency for broadcast networks based on grouping of band segments to enable effective reuse of radio frequency spectrum that enables realizable filters. This may involve co-location of transmitters for a specific group. The grouping of band segments can be applied in a broadcast architecture in which the broadcast market is served by a plurality of low-power, low height transmitters rather than a single high power, high transmitter antenna. By combining the benefits of grouping band segments with low-power, low-transmitter heights which exhibit shorter jamming ranges, further improvements in bandwidth utilization and availability can be achieved. Such a broadcast network may be deployed on transmission sites of existing cellular telephone networks. Embodiments may enable higher efficiency modulation schemes within existing land mobile formats including using higher order constellations that can be supported for mobile communications or using fixed reception specific mixed input/mixed output (MIMO) configurations.

    • Techniques to seamlessly switch reception between multimedia programs are described. For “continued decoding”, a wireless device continues to receive, decode, decompress, and (optionally) display a current program until overhead information needed to decode the new program is received. For “early decoding”, the wireless device receives a user input and identifies a program with potential for user selection. The wireless device initiates decoding of the identified program, prior to its selection, so that the program can be decompressed and displayed earlier if it is subsequently selected. For time-compensated transmission, a base station transmits video and audio for a program in a manner to account for the difference between audio processing delay and video processing delay at the wireless device. This allows the wireless device to present the audio earlier during a program change, since its processing delay is shorter, and thus provide a faster response to the program change.
