Gas or explosivevapour engines.-In a valve for regulating the supply of liquid fuel to an internal - combustion engine, a hand-regulated needle valve F regulates the orifice F leading from the oil or spirit supply, and a piston or diaphragm B with its underside in communication with the cylinder descends and opens the orifice F as the working piston makes its suction stroke. With the orifice F open, oil passes through the holes I in the cap G, and together with air drawn from the atmosphere through the annular opening E passes to the valve box or vaporizer by the pipe D'. At the end of the suction stroke the spring K returns the piston B and an elastic pad in the cap G recloses the orifice F .

Regulating delivery by bypasses.-A fuel pump for internalcombustion engines comprises a movable cylinder d connected by a rod j and arm k to the governor and provided with a by-pass port e through which the liquid is forced during the delivery stroke until the piston a covers it. The areas of the inner and outer end surfaces of the rod j and cylinder d are so chosen that the liquid pressure in the pump does not produce thrust on the governor. In a modification, the liquid is delivered through the delivery valve i until a passage in the piston registers with the port e.

Regulating delivery by by-passes.-The supply of fuel to an internal-combustion engine is controlled by a pump having a constant length of stroke, the delivery being regulated by a relief valve controlled by the engine governor. The pump plunger e is reciprocated by an arm c rocked by a cam c'. The relief valve b is also operated from the arm c through the intermediary of a lever h, arm g, and curved plate f mounted on the arm c. The angular position of the arm g is varied by the engine governor, so that a greater or smaller amount of motion is imparted to the lever hand valve b according to the load requirements of the engine. The pump may be operated by a handlever o, which is also adapted to hold the arm c permanently out of engagement with the cam c for stopping the engine. In a modification, the curved plate f is carried by the lever h and the arm g by the arm c.

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-For starting an engine of the type in which the fuel, which may be a residual oil, is normally injected into the combustion chamber by compressed air at the end of the compression stroke, the engine may he worked when no compressed air is available on the 'aspirating' cycle by which fuel, preferably a light one, is sucked in with air at atmospheric pressure through the fuel valve e and compressed. An additional supply of air is admitted by the valve g, which is used in place of the ordinary air valve b during starting. In addition to the usual ignition bulb f, which is heated at starting, an incandescent igniter h, shaped as a grid through which the charge passes, is provided. The fuel is supplied under the control of the governor during starting. When a supply of compressed air is available, it may be used for starting by means of a starting- valve at o. The combustion chamber has a conical end which is not water-jacketed.
