Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-For starting an engine of the type in which the fuel, which may be a residual oil, is normally injected into the combustion chamber by compressed air at the end of the compression stroke, the engine may he worked when no compressed air is available on the 'aspirating' cycle by which fuel, preferably a light one, is sucked in with air at atmospheric pressure through the fuel valve e and compressed. An additional supply of air is admitted by the valve g, which is used in place of the ordinary air valve b during starting. In addition to the usual ignition bulb f, which is heated at starting, an incandescent igniter h, shaped as a grid through which the charge passes, is provided. The fuel is supplied under the control of the governor during starting. When a supply of compressed air is available, it may be used for starting by means of a starting- valve at o. The combustion chamber has a conical end which is not water-jacketed.
