[Class 106 (ii)]- [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for testing the porosity of a fabric comprises a base 1 with a housing 2 within which an arm 3 is pivotally mounted at 4. The base 1 has an opening 5 over which the fabric is placed and through which air under pressure is blown. At the end of the arm 3 a casing is formed within which is slidably mounted a plate 19 from which are suspended two concentric cylinders 25,.26. The plate 19 carries inverted bolts 30, 35 whose heads bear on springs in the cylinders 25, 26. The arm 3 is held in the operative position as shown in Fig. 2 by a spring clip 17. When the operating means, comprising a lever 48, 49, 50 coupled by toggle mechanism to the plate is raised, a rod 60 disengages the clip 17 allowing the arm to be raised. On fully depressing the lever, the lower extension 40 of the cylinder 25 pushes out a rubber ring 46 into the centre of the groove 45, thus tensioning the material which is finally clamped in this position by the extension 41 of the cylinder 26. To prevent inadvertent release of the operating lever, the arms 49, 50 are provided with spring-urged balls.

The boss is detached from the rod and manipulated over the crosshead after which the boss is replaced on the rod and a split-pin h passed through the boss and a rod hole e. The connection provides for angular movement between the rod and spindle as well as positive turning of the latter.
