    • An integral actuator/reel lock/spring for a video cassette is described, including: (a) a lock body having a first end and a second end, an inclined opening at the first end to receive a tape player/recorder pin, lateral wings, angled grooves and a lead in for a self-centering rib in the cassette base; and (b) a spring bar connected centrally at the second end of the lock body, the spring bar including a pawl and a lower dog leg combination formed at each end. The lock body is received in the cassette base in an area defined by: (a) a first, elongated, central portion having parallel side walls, between which is formed a self-centering rib; and (b) a pair of lateral, substantially triangular walled portions, each spaced from the central portion. The lock body fits substantially within the central portion with the wings extending above the parallel walls, the grooves resting on the parallel walls, the spring bar extending across the parallel walls, the pawls pivotably mounted against the lateral portions and the dog legs underlaying the reels. In the "locked" position, the biasing spring bar normally urges the lock body inward in the central portion. The pawls contact by ratchet action teeth formed on the circumference of each bottom reel flange. During the locked condition, the reel lock has the ability to pivot to each side of a center line of the central portion to move with shifting reels. When the cassette is placed in the player/recorder, a pin of the tape player/recorder enters the inclined opening and forces the lock body against the forece of the spring arm. Only at this time does the lead-in receive the selt-centering rib to direct the lock body backwardly along the center line. Also, the spring arm becomes more curved, pulling the pawls toward the center line and out of ratchet engagement with the teeth so that the lock body enters the unlocked position.

    • Window/cassette cover combinations and more economical methods for assembling the window in the cassette are described. A planar window is: rectangular and includes a pair upper lips, each an opposite sides, and a pair of lower riges or ledges, each on other sides; generally square and includes an upper discontinuous lip and a pair of lower ridges or ledges on opposite sides; or circular and includes an upper continuous lip and a lower continuous ridge or ledge. In each of these three embodiments, the upper lips and lower ledges or ridges cooperate to receive the borders of a window opening formed in the cassette cover, and a label can be applied between the windows and optionally covering one or more windows. In each embodiment of the method, the window is flexed to position opposing ledges under the borders and the window is returned to its original planar position so that the upper lip abuts the top of the border. For each method, a label can be applied between the windows and covering one or more windows, and the above steps are reversed to remove the window.

    • A one-piece retail container removably secures a substantially rigid item, such as a compact disc jewel box, in a securing well. The retail container includes a vertically elongated frame forming sides, top and bottom of the retail container and a front plate, integrally formed with the frame, having front and rear surfaces. The vertically elongated frame forms side and bottom walls of a securing well into which a first aperture of the front plate opens. The front plate forms securing well ledges for restraining the substantially rigid item from passing through the front plate from the securing well. Securing well tabs are integrally formed with the frame at the side and bottom walls of the securing well for restraining the substantially rigid item from moving in a rearward direction, while a center rib is integrally formed on the rear surface, of the front plate at the top of the securing well. The frame, front plate and center rib are formed of a semirigid material which flexes in response to external pressure to permit the substantially rigid item to slide over the center rib and into and out of the securing well. When the external force is removed, the frame, front plate and center rib substantially return to their original positions. A display well may be formed at the top of the retail container with a second aperture of the front plate opening onto the display well, the display well removably securing a substantially planar flexible item, such as a recording album card.

    • A storage box which can be easily modified to store flat, rectangular objects with a plurality of different widths and thicknesses is disclosed. The storage box consists of a rectangular housing member which has a plurality of straight tracks mounted on the inside surfaces of the housing ends. Two rack members may be slid into the housing along the tracks and are held in position by hooks molded into the back of the housing. Each rack member has a planar central portion with a set of ribs mounted on each side of the central portion. Within each set, the ribs are equally spaced ribs, but the spacing between the ribs differs between sets. The rack members are arranged so that when both members are inserted into the housing the spaces between the ribs form a slot into which an object to be stored may be inserted. The structure can be modified to accomodate different sized objects, such as video cartridges, by removing and reversing the rack members to change the slot thickness and by placing the members in different tracks in the housing to adjust the width of the slots.
