    • A driver bit and a header punch for manufacture of screws comprising a screw comprising substantially vertical end wall portions of predetermined depth formed on an end edge portion of a bit fitting groove on a screw head, non-planar bottom portions raised from lower edge portions of the vertical end wall portions toward a center of the screw head, inclined groove portions extending from raised portions of the non-planar bottom portions toward a center of a screw neck, a substantially conical-shaped bottom surface formed on a bottom of the groove, the bit fitting groove being adapted to a driver bit, which has a blade adapted to be fitted into the bit fitting groove and has a lower edge portion of the blade adapted to abut against the non-planar bottom portions. In this manner, groove portions of a cross groove on the screw are improved in construction, whereby it is possible to effectively prevent a driver bit from coming out, prevent breakage of screws caused in the prior art, always achieve an appropriate and rapid screw fastening work even when the cross groove of the screw is broken, and to significantly enhance an efficiency in work.

    • An electrically operated fastening appliance with an automatic controlling clutch mechanism by which on termination of the fastening operation the power transmission from the motor (13) to the driving spindle (36) is instantly discontinued to prevent application of the excessive torque to the screw-threaded connecting means to be tightened and transmission of undesired reversing torque. A screwdriver has a detachable bit 4 which is inserted into an aperture at the end of a shank 1 and has resilient means projecting laterally therefrom for resiliently engaging the aperture to retain the bit. The shank 1 has a transverse slot 2 which is intersected by an axial bore 3 (Figs. 2, 8) or has formed therein axiallyextending recesses 18, 19 (Figs. 16, 19). The bit 4 comprises a rectangular blade portion 5 which has a bent tail portion 6 (Figs. 17a, 17b), a pressed-out central part 13 (Figs. 12a, 12b) or a welded-on strip (Fig. 13, not shown) for engaging in the bore 3 or recess 18. One edge 15 of the bit may be of reduced thickness so that the bit is reversible for use with screws of different sizes. A resilient strip 20 or 21 may be welded to one side of the bit for frictionally engaging in the slot of a screwhead so as to hold the screw, and a protuberance 8 may be provided on the driving edge of the bit for centring the bit in a screw having a slot with a central aperture. The central part of the driving edge of the bit adjacent the pressed-out part 13 may be cut away to form two spaced blade portions 17 (Fig. 19). A plastics sleeve 23 (Fig. 22) may be fitted around the shank 1 for holding a screw. An annular recess 25 locates the sleeve 23 and the exterior of the shank is threaded to facilitate fitting and removal of the sleeve.
