The ice crystals removed by screw conveyor 23, pass into tank 25, wherein they 'are melted by heat exchange coils 31, and fresh water recovered from pipe 30. The means for agitating the ice crystals may be achieved by directing jets of organic liquid downwards from the screen e.g. as shown, pump 20 draws the organic liquid from tank 11, and via flexible tubes 21 passes it to jets 19. The screen may Have baffles 22 and 23 fitted to its upperside to prevent drops 32 of impurities travelling up the screen. The washing is effected at substantially atmosphere pressure and at a temperature below 32‹F but above the freezing point of the separated solution containing impurities. The screen may be made of perforated or expanded metal. The ice crystals to be washed are generally obtained from sea water.

    • 1378193 Washing crystals STRUTHERS PATENT CORP 18 April 1973 [1 May 1972] 20159/72 Heading BIG Apparatus for washing ice crystals free from impurities comprises in combination a conduit having an entrance end, an intermediate liquid permeable portion containing fine passages in the walls thereof and an exit end, means for forcing a slurry of ice crystals into the entrance end of the conduit, means for introducing direct contact refrigerant into the conduit after the intermediate portion associated with means for forcing the refrigerant to flow countercurrent against the slurry and to flow from the conduit with impurities washed from the ice crystals through the liquid permeable intermediate portion. The impurities are preferably collected in a tank disposed about the passageways. As shown in Figure 1 and wherein liquid butane is used as the wash liquid, ice crystals 10 as a slurry are fed from a hopper 11 into conduit 12 by a screw conveyor 13 driven by a motor 14. Liquid butane is introduced into conduit 12 by an annular jacket 19 and flows counter to the compacted ice crystals in the conduit. Located between jacket 19 and screw 13 is a tank 16 positioned around passages 15 in the walls of the conduit. Through these passages the butane including dissolved impurities and liquid squeezed from the slurry passes in the tank. The purified ice crystals leave the conduit and fall into a melt tank 17 after passing through a construction 18. In the tank the crystals are melted by a coil 30 and fresh water 33 recovered from pipe 31. The butane 23 in tank 16 is recirculated by pipes 27 and 28 to jacket 19. If the refrigerant is heavier than water the apparatus features 16 and 17 are used in reverse i.e. the refrigerant is recirculated from the bottom of 16 and fresh water recovered from the top of 17. The specification includes a figure (not shown) of this modification. The ice crystals may be formed by conventional methods in brine or aqueous beverage solutions.
