    • A spring assembly (15) is disclosed for controlling movement of a closure member (such as an independently openable car tailgate rear windscreen (9)) with respect to a body (such as a tailgate (5)) to which the closure member is attached. At least one torsion rod (23a, 23b) is mounted in a housing (17). In one embodiment two torsion rods (23a, 23b) are provided which cross at a mid-point thereof. This is advantageous when the rear windscreen (9) has a curvature, as it allows the curvature of the torsion rods (23a, 23b) to be less than the curvature of the rear windscreen (9). In another embodiment a torsion rod (30) comprises two generally parallel elongate portions (32a, 32b) which are coupled together by co-operating cogs (38a, 38b) to allow the twisting force applied to either one of the elongate portions to be shared equally with the other one of the elongate portions, thereby simulating a torsion rod having twice the length of either of the elongate portions (32A, 32b).

    • A method of forming a sealing or mounting strip on the periphery of a vehicle door 4 is disclosed. The method includes providing a fixed extrusion device 15 for producing an extruded sealing or mounting strip, moving the door 4 with respect to the fixed extrusion device 15, while operating the extrusion device 15 to produce the extruded sealing or mounting strip, such that the sealing or mounting strip 10 is formed along a desired path 10 on the door 4. The door 4 is mounted in a frame 27 which clamps the door 4 around the door's edge. The frame 27 is movable by any suitable means, such as by a robot typically used in automated vehicle fabrication plants. By making use of the frame 27 and movement means already provided in a conventional automated vehicle fabrication plant, little or no additional cost is incurred by providing for movement of the door 4 with respect to the fixed extrusion die 15.

    • A method and apparatus for joining the ends of two profile sections ( 5, 6 ) such as two sealing, trimming or finishing strips for use in motor vehicle body construction, is shown. The two profile sections ( 5, 6 ) are clamped in respective retaining devices ( 18, 20 ) and a length of heat-responsive foil-like material ( 24 ) is unwound from a roll ( 22 ) into a position between the facing ends of the profile sections. Heaters ( 26-32 ) carried by a heater unit ( 34 ) are then moved into position between the ends of the profile sections ( 5, 6 ) and the foil ( 24 ). The outermost heaters ( 26, 30 ) heat the ends of the profile sections, and the innermost heaters ( 28, 32 ) heat the foil. The heaters ( 26 to 32 ) are then withdrawn, and the two retaining devices ( 18, 20 ) are then moved towards each other so as to move the ends of the two profile sections into contact with opposite sides of the heated foil ( 24 ) which thus heat-bonds the ends of the profile sections together. The retaining devices ( 18, 20 ) are then opened to release the joined profile sections. The heaters ( 26 to 32 ) are non-contact type heaters to avoid contaminating the foil or the ends of the profile sections. The use of the separate heaters allows the foil ( 24 ) to be heated to a temperature which is different from that of the ends of the profile sections, to achieve optimum bonding.

    • A retaining and sealing strip made of plastics or rubber, is supported in a channel running along the top of the window frame carried by a conventional vehicle door. The strip defines a hollow chamber running alongside the top of the window opening which, in conjunction with a lip, forms a channel in which is located the upper edge of the window glass. A wall of the chamber is pressed into sealing engagement with window glass by inflation of the hollow chamber. The upper part of the strip defines further hollow chambers, one having a relatively stiff wall hinged by a narrow neck. When this chamber is inflated, the top of the door is retained closed because any attempt at opening it results in interference between a shoulder carried by the stiff wall and a ridge formed on a relatively hard plastics or rubber retaining profile which is rivetted or stuck to the adjacent body part. When the two chambers are at least partially evacuated, the stiff wall hinges to provide clearance for opening of the door.
