    • 1,104,468. Stamping; shearing. MARTIN FUCHS METALLWARENFABRIK. 24 June, 1965, No. 26861/65. Headings B3Q and B3W. Apparatus for converting a single-station press into a multi-station press comprises a multi-unit tool and a transfer unit for moving workpieces between the work stations of the tool-unit. The press-ram 13 is driven, through a flywheel 11, a one-revolution clutch and a crank 44, by an electromotor, brakes stopping the crank after each revolution. Attached to the ram is a holder carrying a blanking punch and other punches for stamping a blank out of strip or foil 17 and forming the blank into cup shape at successive tool-stations, co-operating dies being mounted on the press-table 14. The transfer unit has two electromagnetic workgrippers 171, 172, Fig. 2, and two pivoted-jaw grippers 173, 174 on a cross-slide 18. A vertical slide 20 supports the cross-slide 18 and this is carried on a saddle 19 movable lengthwise of the strip. The slides 18, 20 and saddle 19 are moved by fluid-pressure cylinders 181, 201, 191 controlled by solenoid-valves A, E, B, C, D, F. The strip is fed by a fluid-pressure clamp 38, 42 carried by the saddle 19, return movements of the strip being prevented by a stationary clamp 41 when the released clamp 38, 42 is returned. Finished work is released by the gripper 174 over a slide 21 leading to a container 22, and the waste strip is fed to a cutter (not shown). Operation.-At the end of its return stroke, the ram 13 operates a switch 1 controlling valve A for advancing the cross-slide 18 and carrying the grippers over the dies. The slide 18 operates a switch 2 controlling valve B for lowering the slides 18, 20 and grippers. This operates switches 3, I for energizing the clamps 171, 172, closing grippers 173, 174 and operating valve C for raising the gripped workpieces. The grippers 173, 174 are closed by wedges driven between their ends 25, 26 by fluidpressure cylinders controlled by solenoidvalves L 1 , L 2 , M 1 , M 2 . At the end of the upward movement, a switch is operated by one of the slides for operating valve D controlling forward strokes of the saddle 19 carrying the grippers. A switch tripped by the saddle operates valve B for lowering the workpieces at the next station. At the end of this movement switches II, 3 are operated for de-energizing the electromagnetic grippers 171, 172, opening grippers 173, 174 and raising the slides-and-transfer assembly. At the end of the vertical movement a switch 6 is operated for returning the saddle 19 and simultaneously withdrawing the crossslide 18, which then operates a switch 7 for re-starting the press-ram 13. Photo-cells 48, 51 in the control circuit stop the press if the strip 17 is moved out of the horizontal or a finished workpiece is not transferred from the machine after each operation.
