    • A system (10) for internal fixation of bone includes a fixation plate (12) having a number of bores (18) therethrough, a corresponding number of screws (14) each having an enlarged head portion (20) and an elongated shaft portion (22) defining bone engaging threads (25) and a non-threaded portion (42) between the head and threaded portions (20, 25), and a corresponding number of screw anti-back out members (16) each having a bore (45) therethrough. The screw anti-back out members (16) are positioned within the bores (18) of the fixation plate (12) and are initially sized to slidingly receive an elongated shaft (22). The screws (14) are advanced through the plate bores (18) and screw anti-back out members (16) so that the fixation plate (12) is secured to the bone with the bores (45) of the screw anti-back out members (16) surrounding a non-threaded portion (42) of the shafts (22). The system (10) is thereafter heated sufficiently to shrink the bores (45), thereby trapping the non-threaded portions (42) of the screw shafts (22) between the fixation plate (12) and the threaded portions (15).

    • A system (10) for direct visualization of the spine includes a catheter (12) and a fiber-optic bundle (20) disposed within the catheter (12) which is connected to a light source and camera. The optical bundle is connected (26) to the proximal end of the catheter to permit rotation of the bundle relative thereto. A mechanism for deflecting the catheter tip provides a conical viewing angle (13) for the fiber-optic bundle and assists in steering the catheter through the spinal space. The mechanism includes a deflection wire (57) extending through the catheter and affixed at the distal end (83) thereof. The proximal end of the deflection wire is affixed to a sleeve (58) slidably disposed around the catheter to contact a stop surface (59) as the catheter and deflection wire are moved. The stop surface prevents further movement of the catheter causing tension in the wire between the sleeve and the wire's securement to the catheter, thereby bending the catheter tip in the direction of the securement.

    • An arcuate frame assembly (10) for use in external fixation systems or devices is disclosed. The arcuate frame assembly (10) is comprised of an x-ray transparent or radiolucent frame segment (12) having a plurality of holes (16) drilled therethrough with counterbores sunk into both sides of the hole (16) for receiving therein an aluminum eyelet (14). The eyelet (14) is glued or press-fitted into the hole. The eyelets are made of aluminum which is a radiolucent material. The eyelets are color coded using aluminum anodizing techniques to produce a variety of colors. The color of the eyelets (14) installed into a particular frame assembly (10) signify the size or shape of the assembly (10) thereby enabling one to ascertain at a glance which arcuate frame assemblies (10) are designed to mate with one another to provide a circular assembly for encircling the limbs of a patient.
