The punch is also provided with a pair of piercing portions (179) for piercing through the workpiece after the member has centered the punch assembly with the pilot hole and a pair of cutting portions (110,112) for shearing the workpiece after the piercing portions have pierced the workpiece.

    • Cast metal parts are created for use in making machinery. When these parts are formed, unwanted material remains in the openings of the parts. This material, called flash, must be removed. In the method of the present invention, the cast parts are placed on a platen of a trim press that has multi-part punches attached thereto that are configured to self-align with the openings in the cast part and operative to evenly remove the flash. The invention also relates to a punch that initially breaks through the flash with a stationary punch that removes a majority of the flash inside the opening of the cast part. Next, a moving or self-centering punch self-aligns to the opening in the cast part and operates to remove the remaining flash. The inventive punch may also include a mounting base for attachment of the multi-part punches to the plate or platen of the press.

    • A high-precision punch and die method wherein a pair of pneumostatic bearings (30 and 34) are mounted on a rigid frame structure (40) in registered spaced-apart relation to each other, each bearing (30 and 34) having a plurality of journal segments (30a, b, c, d and 34a, b, c, d) provided with a pneumostatic bearing surface (32a, b, c, d and 36a, b, c, d) and adjustably mounted on the frame structure (40). A segmented die (26) is mounted on the frame structure (40) in registered spaced-apart relation to (and preferably between) the two bearings (30 and 34), the die (26) having a plurality of die segments (26a, b, c) provided with a cutting edge (28a, b, c) and adjustably mounted on the frame structure (40). The bearing journal segments (30a, b, c, d and 34a, b, c, d) and the die segments (26a, b, c) are adjusted, by use of a mating set-up bar (B), to achieve required sizing and alignment of the bearings (30 and 34) and die (26). A punch (10) is then positioned in the bearings (30 and 34) for guided movement through the die (26), the punch (10) having an integral pneumostatic bearing surface (16, 18, 20, 22 et al.) closely facing each journal-segment bearing surface (32a, b, c, d and 36a, b, c, d) and a cutting edge (14) adapted to coact with each die-segment cutting edge (28a, b, c). A pressurized gas (G), preferably air, is controllably supplied to each journal-segment bearing surface (32a, b, c, d and 36a, b, c, d) to provide needed constraint and guidance to the punch (10). The punch (10) is then moved, as by a pneumatic cylinder (P), through the bearings (30 and 34) and die (26) to bring the punch and die cutting edges (14 and 28a, b, c) into precise coaction.
