    • Handover is improved from a 3 G WCDMA UTRAN to a generic access network (GAN) cell. For handover, mobile stations measure signal level from neighbor cells. In a WCDMA UTRAN, measurement of cells having a frequency number different from the serving cell, require the network to generate time gaps so the mobile station can perform measurements on different frequencies. GAN cells do not transmit on their allotted frequency number. This number together with an identifier is used to identify the GAN cell between the MS and RNC. A modified registration procedure permits GAN cells to always have the same frequency number as neighboring UTRAN cells, wherein the MS communicates the current UTRAN cell frequency number to the GAN controller, which adopts this number, and determines the corresponding identifier. The identifier may be the same for all GAN cells, or can be obtained from a mapping table, which maps an identifier to each frequency.

    • A system, method, and apparatus in an access network such as the Generic Access Network (GAN) for providing user-type information to a Security Gateway (SEGW) or for enabling the SEGW to obtain user-type information for different user types so that the SEGW can apply specific security functions based on the user type. The invention may also provide user-type information to a controller node such as a GAN Controller (GANC) or may enable the GANC to obtain user-type information for application of security settings toward GAN-clients. An Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) Server may create a user-type indication internally, or may obtain an indication from a Home Location Register and forward the indication to the SEGW. The SEGW may forward the indication to the GANC, or the GANC may determine the user-type information internally or retrieve it from a database.

The Access Point, used for connecting wireless networks to a core network, is being equipped with a User Equipment module, UE module. The UE module is used for scanning, for example upon a triggering event, a surrounding environment of the Access Point to identify neighbor Radio Base Stations. The Access Point then creates a neighbor list including information relating to neighbor Radio Base Stations. The Access Point forwards the neighbor list to the Network Control Node, wherein the Network Control Node uses the information in the neighbor list to estimate a position of the Access Point.

    • Localized areas within a cell of a cellular wireless communication network, wherein users experience high traffic loads or poor coverage, are automatically detected and positioned by a network-based monitoring and positioning method. The localized areas are detected by performing measurements (e.g., TAdv, AOA, and neighbor node measurements) on User Equipment (UE) indicating or recording a network capacity or coverage deficiency. The detected, localized area of deficient performance is then positioned (e.g., in latitude and longitude), such as by positioning one or more UE within the area. The deficient network capacity or coverage, the localized area in which it is concentrated, and the position of the localized area are then reported, with a recommendation to deploy a low-power serving node within the localized area (e.g., at or near the area reported position) to alleviate the capacity or coverage deficiency, while minimizing interference with communication services to other users within the cell.
