    • In an actuator latch device of a hard disk drive for locking an actuator to hold a magnetic head parked in a parking area, the actuator latch device includes a locking protrusion provided on an end portion of the actuator, a stopping guard having left and right side hooking portions for restricting a pivot range of the locking protrusion, a latch lever rotatably installed on the stopping guard for locking the actuator which rotates in one direction to have the magnetic head positioned in the parking area, and for preventing the actuator from moving back in the opposite direction, by moving one end of the latch lever to a position for interfering with the locking protrusion when the the head is parked, and a latch lever driving means for driving the latch lever between a locking position and an unlocking position. Thus, since locking and unlocking is performed by selectively restricting movement of the locking protrusion provided on the actuator, a locking state can be firmly maintained and unlocking is performed smoothly without any impact.

    • A fly height detector apparatus and associated method for detecting the fly height of a read/write head spatially disposed from a data storage surface during a data transfer operation. The fly height detector apparatus comprises a receiver circuit measuring the frequency of the read/write head; a perturbation deliverable to the gap between the read/write head and the data storage surface to invoke a dynamic response in the read/write head; and a processor circuit responsive to the receiver circuit to derive a fly height in relation to the dynamic response frequency. The processor circuit comprises a memory in which is stored a numerical model describing a functional interrelationship between the fly height and the read/write head frequency.

    • A data storage device includes a disc stack, a rotary actuator having an arm coupled to a transducer head, and support structure for receiving the arm with a reduced incidence of sliding contact therewith. The arm is separated from the support means, and then moved so that the head is above a disc surface for storing data. After the disc stack reaches its nominal rotation speed, the head is loaded so that it can transfer data. During periods of non-activity, the head is raised (unloaded) again and the arm is placed on the support means. This reduces a risk of damage in the presence of shocks while minimizing particle generation induced by friction.
