    • 1477339 Cutting and bevelling pipes BRITISH GAS CORP 2 June 1975 [31 May 1974] 24282/74 Heading B3T In a pipe-cutting machine of the type having a driving ring which surrounds a stationary pipe with which it is centred and located and means for moving the drive ring around the pipe a tool carrier 1 is securely attached to the ring and which carries a slidably displaceable tool holder 2 movable radially of the pipe and ring axis, the tool holder having at least one cutting tool 4 and means in the form of a shoe or roller 6 for following the contour of the pipe and automatic feed mechanism is provided for the tool holder which is operated as the ring and tool carrier travel around the pipe. The feed mechanism is in the form of a ratchet (not shown) and wheel 17 which moves the tool holder radially incrementally as the carrier rotates around the pipe. Guide pins 14, 15 are provided between the carrier 1 and the holder 2 and the holder is urged towards the surface of the pipe by springs 10 to maintain contact between the wheel 6 and the pipe surface to ensure a constant depth of cut as the ring and carrier rotate. Using two cutting tools 4, as shown in Fig. 2, the pipe may be simultaneously grooved and bevelled. Alternatively, the pipe may merely be severed by using a single cutting off tool. The depth of cut can be gauged by the projection of the pins 14, 15 which may also have graduations thereon.

    • 1351143 Roller box tools C J THOMSON 7 Feb 1972 [20 Nov 1970] 55218/70 Heading B3T A roller box tool 10 comprises a pair of substantially tubular members 11A and 11B which are pivotally connected together so as to articu- late transversely to their common axis, the free end of member 11A carrying the cutting tool 15 and support rollers 16A, 16B and the member 11B, which provides means for mounting the box tool in a machine tool 19, is articulated by a pivot pin 12, the axes ZZ 1 and XX 1 of the members 11A and 11B being urged normally out of alignment by spring 14. In operation, a pilot part 17A of a workpiece 17 enters the mouth of the box tool 10 and passes between the tip 15A of the tool 15 and the leading edge 16 1 of the rollers 16A, 16B with the roller 16B spring urged on to the peripheral surface of the pilot part 17A. As the bar is fed further into the mouth of the box tool, the leading edge 16 1 of the rollers 16A, 16B meet a chamfer 17B and both rollers subsequently ride up on to the periphery of the bar 17, which forces the member 11A into axial alignment, i.e. the axes ZZ 1 and XX 1 are coincident. The cutting tip 15A of the tool 15 therefore cuts into the surface of the bar and produces an undercut of diameter d 3 .
