A dose of coffee powder is put in the brewing chamber, the inlet is used to supply water to the chamber for preparing a coffee beverage, the first piston provides a movable wall for adjusting the chamber internal volume, and the movable wall has an outlet connected to a spout for delivering the coffee beverage to a user, and the valve assembly connects the spout to the brewing chamber or the atmosphere according to the position of supporting means. Advantageously a second piston is provided which moves the first piston and supports the valve assembly. The second piston is movable with respect to the first piston, for actuating the valve assembly.

A user interface mechanism may receive input identifying the given customer. A controller may select a base drink recipe dependent on the customer's identity, and may initiate production of a beverage using the selected drink recipe. Each drink recipe may specify an amount of water, coffee, flavorings, dairy, and/or other ingredients, and may be further customizable to add or remove ingredients and/or to change an amount thereof, based on received user input. The stored customer-specific information may include a customer identifier, account information, a purchase history, a message history, drink recipes, and/or an email address for each of a plurality of customers.
