    • In a channel selection apparatus for a television receiver or FM radio receiver having an electronic tuner, a local oscillation signal of the electronic tuner having a local oscillator which is swept by a voltage sweeping circuit is passed through a comb-shape filter having a SAW element. Peak outputs from the comb-shape filter are counted by a presettable counter. When the count reaches a preset count, the sweeping operation of the voltage sweeping circuit is stopped to select a desired channel. A portion of the peaks of the comb-shape filter characteristic is attenuated and a gap appearing at the attenuated portion is detected by the frequency sweep of the local oscillation signal with a change in time interval. The detection signal is compared to discriminate the first pulse necessary for the channel selection.

    • In a tuning system including a station selector for generating a digital word representative of a selected channel, a counter for counting periods of a local oscillator signal during a measurement interval to generate a digital word representing the accumulated count and a comparator for generating control signals for the local oscillator in accordance with the deviation between the station-representative and count-representative digital words, apparatus is provided to enable the number of bits in the count-representative digital word to be less than the number of bits in the station-representative digital word. Such an arrangement is therefore particularly useful when it is desired to incorporate a large portion of the tuning system in a relatively inexpensive microcomputer in which only a relatively small number of bits, e.g., 8, can be dynamically processed. Specifically, the tuning system operates in coarse, medium and fine tuning steps. During each step a predetermined group of bits derived from the station-representative digital word are selected for comparison and the duration of the measurement interval is set in accordance with the bits selected.

    • A channel selector system in a radio for sequentially selecting one of a plurality of channels and rapidly scanning through any restricted channels such that the restricted channels are not displayed and appear to be skipped. The radio includes a frequency synthesizer for generating a predetermined frequency associated with each selected channel and the channel selector system has a signal generator which causes the frequency synthesizer to sequentially either step or scan through the channels including some channels which may be restricted. The generator provides an output coded signal to indicate selection of a restricted channel which is decoded by decoding circuitry. A scan timer is responsive to the decoded signal to cause the signal generator to rapidly scan through restricted channels. A latching circuit latches a signal generator input during rapid scanning through restricted channels until the system advances to the next unrestricted channel. Related methods are disclosed.

    • Improvements in signal receiving apparatus of the type including a tuning stage having a presettable channel selecting storage device for storing selected channel identity signals representing predetermined channels to which the tuning stage is tunable and wherein any of the stored channel identity signals is selectively read out so as to control the tuning stage to be tuned to the channel represented by the read out channel identity signal. The improvements comprise a presettable memory device for storing control signals associated with the respective predetermined channels, these control signals being used to control at least one operating condition of the signal receiving apparatus. A selectively operable preset circuit generates at least one control signal for storage in the memory device when the tuning stage is tuned to an associated channel during a preset operation. A particular stored channel identity signal is read out from the storage device and, concurrently therewith, at least one control signal associated with the channel represented by the read out channel identity signal is read out of the memory device. The read out channel identity signal determines the channel to which the tuning stage is tuned, and the read out control signal, or signals, determines the operating condition of the signal receiving apparatus for that channel.

    • A frequency synthesizer type receiver having a channel selection device which comprises a tuning sensor (40) generating a stop pulse when a radio wave from a broadcasting station is caught, a control unit (34) for controlling channel selection, and a designation signal generator (36) for supplying clock signals to the control unit (34). Upon receipt of a start pulse the designation signal generator (36) starts generating clock signals. In response to the clock signals the control unit (34) controls the frequency tuning of a frequency synthesizer receiver. When the receiver catches a radio wave from a broadcasting station, the tuning sensor (40) supplies a stop pulse to the designation signal generator (36). Upon receipt of the stop pulse the designation signal generator (36) stops generating clock signals. Then the channel selection is completed.
