    • A heat exchanger apparatus is disclosed comprising a heat exchanger casing having a plurality of box members suspended within the casing, with each box member having a plurality of tubular members disposed within an arrangement which permits the exchange of heat from a hot gas stream flowing outside the tubular members to a cooler gas stream flowing counter-currently within the tubular members. The heat exchanger apparatus is adapted especially for the use in high temperature nuclear reactors and is disposed within a pod in the reactor pressure vessel communicating directly with the reactor core. The suspension of the primary heat exchange components enables the achievement of excellent exchange capability with minimum stress on the exchanger apparatus as a result of thermal expansion. A method of exchanging heat from a primary cooling circuit of a high temperature reactor to an intermediate gas circuit of a heat process plant is also disclosed.

    • The heat exchanger which acts as a recuperator is constructed of a plurality of identical sub-assemblies which can be manufactured and tested in a plant and shipped as individual units to a construction site. Each sub-assembly includes a plurality of straight tubes which interconnect with spherical shells at each end and which serve to carry a flowable medium. Each sub-assembly also includes a guide tube about the straight tubes which is open at both ends to convey a flowable medium over the straight tubes but which has an outer flange which cooperates with similar flanges on the other sub-assemblies to block any flow of this medium over the outside surfaces of the guide tube from one end to the other.

    • The process of the invention includes the concept of igniting a coal formation in situ with hot granular material and subsequently allowing the material to flow into the burning coal formation to serve as a propping agent in the event of a cave-in. Gasifying agents are injected into the formation in an alternating pattern to alternately oxidize and reduce the coal environment to optimize the BTU content of the recovered gas. Further, a heat receptive liquid is circulated through the casing in the well connecting the coal formation to the surface to strip the sensible heat from the produced gases so that the heat can be used for useful purposes apart from the produced gas.The apparatus of the invention includes a casing in the well bore which has a plurality of vertically spaced dividers each having a passage therethrough so that a heat receptive fluid can be passed between dividers in a vertical descent through the casing and during such descent strip sensible heat from the produced gas before being brought back to the surface. Hot granular material is placed in the well in contact with the coal formation to ignite the formation and to flow into cavities formed in the formation during the burning thereof to serve as a propping agent.

    • The present form of direct flame incinerator unit makes use of heat exchange tubing in two different, end-to-end heat exchange sections. Large diameter, self-supporting tubes are used to surround the flame-combustion zone and eliminates the conventional use of an expensive, interior cylinder positioned within and around the flame zone so as to separate the incoming gas stream from the combustion product stream. A multiplicity of small diameter tubes are used in the downstream part of the unit, with respect to combustion gas flow, and these tubes connect through a redistribution section to the larger diameter tubes around the flame-combustion section, whereby the incoming gas stream passes entirely countercurrently to the combustion gases and feeds directly into a plenum section around the burner means.

    • A cooler for the passage of a regulable partial current of heat carrier in a reaction vessel includes a cooler housing having longitudinally spaced inlet and outlet connections. A plurality of cooling tubes extend longitudinally through the housing and the interior of the housing is divided into a flow path along and around the tubes from the inlet to the outlet and a control flow through a by-pass extending from the inlet to the outlet on the exterior of the tubes but within the housing. The coolant is circulated through a central coolant inlet tube which extends centrally within the tube bundle for flow from the chamber defined at the far end upwardly through the tubes to an opposite chamber for removal. The by-pass flow is regulated by means of a slide valve which may be slid along the by-pass passage to divert a portion of the inlet flow through the inlet so that it flows directly through the by-pass to the outlet and is not affected by the cooling tubes. The circulation to the cooler may be from the interior of the reactor to the inlet and from the outlet back into the reactor. Alternatively, the flow may be through an annular conduit extending around the reactor from the outlet of the cooler and thence downwardly on the exterior passage around the annular outlet back to the inlet. The first partial current conducted around the cooling tubes and the second partial current conducted through the by-pass passage, which are regulable relative to each other, form together a constant partial current of the heat carrier circulated in the reaction vessel.
