    • Fires in kitchen appliances are detected and controlled by a detection and control system that activates a fire extinguishing system when the fire is detected, terminates the supply of electricity and/or gas to the appliances, and initiates audible and visual alarms. The audible alarm can be terminated, while the visual alarm continues until the system is restored to a pre-detection state. The system includes a control circuit, and a fire detection means with a moveable member that engages a normally closed microswitch in the control circuit to open the control circuit. Relays in the control circuit change state upon opening of the control circuit to de-energize the appliance, and audible and visual alarms are activated. The audible alarm can be manually terminated. However, the visual alarm remains activated until the system is recharged and returned to the ready state.

    • A safety shutdown system for a vehicle containing a hazardous fluid material such as gasoline, liquid propane gas (LPG) or anhydrous ammonia (NH.sub.3) permits turn-off of the vehicle's engine and closure of the vehicle's storage tank valves by the vehicle's operator remotely located from the vehicle. The system includes a hand-held controller including a receiver and transmitter as well as a receiver/transmitter combination located in the vehicle's cab. The transmitter in the cab is coupled to a vehicle-mounted flow meter for providing an RF signal to the remote receiver for display on the hand-held controller of the amount of material discharged from the vehicle's tank. The cab-mounted receiver is responsive to an operator-initiated shutdown signal emitted by the remote controller and is coupled to a pulling solenoid which is, in turn, coupled to the storage tank valves via a cable for closing the valves and stopping the flow of hazardous material when the controller is actuated. Receipt of a shutdown signal by the vehicle-mounted receiver also results in immediate turn-off of the vehicle's engine to prevent a spark-initiated explosion and turn-off of an engine powered discharge pump attached to the vehicle' s storage tank. The remotely controlled shutdown system provides safe and reliable control of hazardous material handling, particularly in an emergency situation such as in-volving a fire or accidental spill of the material.

    • A valve installed in the flow line of a flammable or other hazardous flowable material which normally open but will be automatically closed to interrupt the flow of flammable or hazardous material to a discharge point in the event of a hazardous condition occurring. The valve is held in an open position by a fusible link which retains a pivotal latch in engagement with a spring biased valve to retain the valve in open position. The fusible link will melt when subjected to predetermined conditions such as a high temperature condition which occurs in the event of a fire thereby releasing the latch and valve for movement to a closed position for stopping flow of flammable material in order to control the fire or other hazardous condition.

    • The system of the present invention is comprised of the following: a fire extinguisher; solenoid adapted to release said extinguisher; a flexible conduit adapted to direct the contents of the extinguisher to the stove; a linear heat detector for sensing fire; a disconnecting box adapted to disconnect the cooking gas or electricity from stove at the event of fire; a second CO2 gas or equivalent gas container that is connected to the disconnecting box; another solenoid adapted to release said gas container; more conduits connected to each of the burners in the stove. In this configuration, fire suppression, and gas cutoff are effected simultaneously. Additionally to the above mentioned effects, the system further simultaneously injects CO2 or similar extinguishing gas instead of natural gas straight to the burner itself suffocating the fire at the source.

    • An air purge and pressurization system that utilizes a variable speed fan and a feedback loop to optimize system operation is described herein. In one embodiment, such a system can include an enclosed container located in an area classified as hazardous, a controller rated for operation within the hazardous area, and a pressure sensor located within the container and coupled to the controller. The system can also include a variable-speed fan located outside the hazardous area and coupled to the controller. The controller can be configured to monitor air pressure within the container and variably control a speed of the fan to maintain the detected pressure above a minimum value. Accordingly, a required pressure can be maintained while minimizing a volume of air forced into the container.
