    • 5179. Hansen, J. M. March 5. Wagons; underframing of bodies.-Relates to metal underframes for railway vehicles, especially box cars and gondola cars, having wooden superstructures. The underframe is constructed with centre, side, and end sills, draught sills, bolsters, and transverse tying-members. The centre sills consist of channel beams 1, Figs. 2 and 3, which extend through the bolsters and are riveted to the draught sills 3. Each bolster 2 consists of a top cover plate 4 passing through slots in the beams 1, a bottom cover plate passing below the beams 1, cast-steel flanged fillers 6 riveted to the cover plates and to the centre and side sills, and a cast brace 11 placed between the centre sills and preferably formed with a vertical hole for the centre pin. Side bearing-pieces 9 are riveted to the bottom plate 5. The side sills 14 are of Z-section, and support wooden stringers 15 ; they are riveted to flanges on the ends of the fillers 6 and have strengthening angle - pieces 17. Intermediate wooden stringers 18 are bolted to the top flanges of the bolsters. A cover plate 20 is riveted to the tops of the centre sills along their whole length. The draught sills 3 are of Z-section, their top flanges being flush with the tops of the centre sills and their lower flanges below the centre sills. Draught lugs are riveted to the inner faces of the draught sills. Each end sill 24 is of L-section with the vertical flange wider in the middle than at the ends and the horizontal flange wider at the ends than at the middle. It is connected to the draught sills as shown in Fig. 1 , and is strengthened by an L-bar 28 which supports a wooden sill 29. Round the hole for the draw-bar the end sill is strengthened by a horn brace 30, Fig. 2, and a buffer casting 31 with a draw-bar carrier 32 is riveted to it on the outside. Diagonal braces are connected by gusset plates to the ends of the end sills and to the centre sills. The side sills are tied to the centre sills at intervals by channel bars 36, Fig. 4, attached by angle-pieces 37, 37 , and braces 40 consisting of plates pressed to a box shape are riveted to the centre sills in line with the channelbars 36. The sills also tied together by deeper channel-beams 42, Fig. 3, braces 48, and pairs of angle-bars 50 passing under the centre sills from one side sill to the other. The tying-members 36, 42 also support wooden stringers 18. The underframe is trussed by rods 51, secured to the bolsters by anchor castings 52 and passing under queen posts 53 riveted to the angle-ties 50. The anchor castings 52 may be formed to hook over the edge of the bolster, the filler 6 being formed with a bulb edge to take the strain. The side posts of the wagon body are preferably secured to the sills by cast socket pieces 60, Fig. 11, formed with flanges 62 for bolting to the sills and with lugs 64 taking into holes in plates 65 riveted to the sills.
