    • A method of grouping cells of a radio communications network may include defining first and second groups of cells from a plurality of cells that transmit reference signals for positioning measurements. The first and second groups of cells may be defined according to a characteristic of the reference signals transmitted by the respective cells and/or of the respective cells that transmit the reference signals. Reference signals used for positioning measurements from the cells of the first group may be measured at a positioning target device. Reference signals used for positioning measurements from the cells of the second group may be measured at the positioning target device separately in time and/or separately in frequency from measuring the reference signals from the cells (103) of the first group.

    • Positioning and location services are provided in a wireless communication network using civic address information. The civic address information may comprise a data structure including textual Information Elements such as apartment or office number, street number, street name, city, state, postal code, and the like. A positioning method is defined comprising performing a civic address lookup to obtain a location in civic address format for an identified node, based upon information about the identified node's serving (or associated) node and neighbor nodes. Signaling is defined to request the civic address positioning method, to exchange capabilities, to communicate location information using a civic address format, report a positioning failure and optionally the failure cause, and the like. Location information may be translated between a civic address format and a 3GPP or 3GPP2 positioning format. The positioning method and associated signaling are particularly advantageous in indoor environments, where conventional positioning methods fare poorly or fail altogether.

    • Methods and arrangements for improving the selection of neighbor cells, on which to perform measurements in different situations. The method in a first node involves obtaining information identifying a first and a second set of neighboring cells for a respective first and second measurement category. A third set of neighboring cells is then determined based on at least parts of the obtained information related to the first and second set. Measurements are then performed in a third measurement category on at least part of the cells in the third set of neighboring cells. The methods and arrangements enable combination of information on neighbor cells, obtained in different ways for different measurement categories into a combined set of neighbor cells, which is more suitable for measurements in a certain measurement category than a set of cells previously obtained for performing measurements in said measurement category.

    • A networks node generates an inter-frequency neighbor list of neighbor cells intended to be measured including neighbor cells satisfying an alignment condition and a sufficient measurement time. The alignment condition is satisfied when subframes of a first signal having a first frequency transmitted via a reference cell associated with the user equipment are synchronized with, have a known offset relative to or have a random offset smaller than one half of a sub frame relative to corresponding subframes of a second signal having a second frequency transmitted via a neighboring cells. The sufficient measurement time is determined by an overlap of measurement gaps and positioning subframes in the second signal. The user equipment performs the inter-frequency Reference Signal Time Difference (RSTD) measurements during measurement gaps.

    • In its various aspects, the present invention addresses the many challenges associated with making timing measurements involving multifarious radio links. Such measurements are referred to herein as “enhanced” to connote that such timing determinations are being made across multifarious radio links. Here, a radio link will be understood as connecting two radio nodes, and two radio links are considered to be multifarious with respect to each other if they are opposite in terms of uplink and downlink transmit directions, and further if they are associated with different cell identifiers and/or if the two links are between different pairs of radio nodes. In this context, the teachings herein disclose the sharing of “enhanced timing measurement” capability information, e.g., between radio nodes and positioning nodes. Such information indicates the enhanced timing measurement capability of a radio node. Sharing such information enables another node, e.g., a positioning node, to determine an enhanced timing measurement configuration to be used by a radio node. Further, additional teachings herein disclose advantageous configurations for making enhanced timing measurements, and techniques for compensating timing measurements determined from multifarious radio links, e.g., compensating for frequency-dependent propagation time differences.
