    • An apparatus which allows for software sharing between multiple controllers includes a computer bus and a plurality of processors each having input and output ports coupled to the bus. Each processor also has at least one internal storage register. The apparatus further includes means, which are responsive to a signal indicating which one of the plurality of processors is controlling the computer bus and to a portion of address data on the bus, for issuing a control signal to one of the plurality of processors to permit that one processor access to at least one of its internal storage register when that processor issues a bus access request having an address which is within the range of addresses of all the processors.

    • A method for selecting an optimal operating tension of a motor driven tape in a tape drive is disclosed. The tape is loaded into the tape drive. A test signal is applied to record test information onto the tape while the tape tension is varied concurrently in a prescribed manner for testing. The recorded test information is read immediately to provide a test readback signal. The test readback signal is processed to determine a functional relationship between the test readback signal and the varying tape tension. An operating tape tension value is selected based upon the functional relationship. The selected operating tape tension is implemented on the tape drive in the form of a command signal to a motor means of the tape drive.

Le mécanisme de tunnel de l'invention exige que chaque RL ou RL étendu n'ait qu'un seul circuit de tunnel actif à tout moment donné, circuit que l'on désigne par circuit de tunnel en titre, et chaque circuit de tunnel est configuré de manière à avoir connaissance des identités des autres circuits de tunnel. Un tunnel est établi après un échange réussi de messages entre deux circuits de tunnel, le trafic pouvant alors être acheminé par le tunnel de manière transparente. Le mécanisme de tunnel permet d'acheminer les messages entre des RL séparés par un réseau longue portée contenant des circuits d'acheminement. Ce mécanisme permet de plus de filtrer letrafic, de telle sorte que seuls les types de trafic ou les messages transmis à certaines destinations ou provenant de certaines sources sont acheminés par les tunnels. Le mécanisme de tunnel est conçu pour empêcher la formation de boucles de communication fermées. Dans un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention, le processus de configuration est optimisé pour certaines topologies particulières de réseau.

    • An image decoding apparatus including a Huffman decoder for decoding CCITT-encoded image information encoded in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional encoding to sequentially generate individual symbols each associated with a pixel run. A relative address decoder receives each symbol from the Huffman decoder and generates, in response thereto, an item of run-length information and a color value representing the color of the pixel run. Finally, a run length decoder sequentially receives the successive items of run length information and uses them in generating sequential words for transmission to, for example, a display device. The run-length decoder iteratively receives run-length information comprising a length value and a data value and generates in response thereto a series of fixed-length data words of predetermined length. The run-length decoding apparatus includes a run pointer control circuit and a data word creator circuit. The pointer control circuit generates, in response to each item of run-length information, a pointer identifying the end, within the data word, of a run. In response to each pointer, the data word creator circuit inserts into the word data bits representative of the data value. The pointer control circuit and data word creator circuit operate iteratively to generate successive data words as the sequential items of run-length information are received.
