    • An invasive, fluid velocity measuring wire guide particularly adapted and of a size (less than 0.030 inch) for subselective placement in the coronary arterial tree, which includes a Doppler mechanism for determining the blood flow velocity in the region of the distal end of the wire guide. Although the wire guide is particularly adapted for diagnosing coronary arterial disease subselectively; it is of such a size and manipulability to be useful in other blood flow and biological fluid flow analyses. Preferably, the wire guide is flexible and steerable for precise placement. The wire guide includes an elongated wire member having a Doppler crystal attached in longitudinal alignment at its distal end. Electrical leads extend from the Doppler crystal along the wire member to the appropriate test equipment for measuring the fluid flow velocity in the region of the Doppler crystal. Preferred embodiments of the Doppler means include piezoelectric crystals and piezoelectric polymers. Also disclosed is a guide wire with a laser Doppler means.

    • A proximal femoral sealing device is disclosed for use in the application of bone cement under pressure to a surgically prepared medullary canal of a femur prior to the implantation of a hip prostesis. The proximal femoral sealing device is formed of a generally solid body member with a passageway and a flexible annular wall member extending from the body member. The sealing device has an anatomically shaped outer surface, corresponding to the exposed endosteal surface of a prepared medullary canal. A chamber defined by a flexible annular wall and the body member opens into the medullary canal. In turn, the passageway communicates with the chamber and permits insertion of a cement nozzle therethrough into the chamber. In operation, the proximal femoral sealing device is placed within the proximal end of a surgically prepared medullary canal. The canal and chamber of the sealing device are filled with cement resulting in the expansion of the flexible annular wall member against the exposed endosteal walls of the medullary canal by cement pressure within the chamber thereby forming a pressure seal. The escape of cement through the open end of the excavated medullary canal is prevented via this pressure seal insuring that the applied cement is properly pressurized and that the medullary canal is prepared for implementation of the prosthetic device. A method of providing cement under pressure to the exposed endosteal surface of a medullary canal is also disclosed using this proximal femoral sealing device.

    • A novel prosthesis for use in repairing or replacing soft tissue is disclosed, which comprises a triaxially-braided fabric element having interwoven first, second and third sets of fibers, with the fibers of the second and third sets being oriented at substantially the same acute braiding angle with respect to the fibers of the first set. An elongated ligament prosthesis exhibiting the desired properties of high strength and high elasticity may be prepared by selecting high elasticity fibers for the first set, orienting said first set of fibers in the longitudinal direction of the prosthesis and selecting fibers having high yield strength and high Young's modulus for the second and third sets. A tubular prosthesis in which high elasticity fibers are oriented in the longitudinal direction is highly suitable for use as a vascular prosthesis. A prosthesis of the invention may also be manufactured in the form of a prosthetic heart valve leaflet.
