    • A heat exchanger is mounted external to a section of flue pipe or is an integral part of a section of flue pipe. The heat exchanger preheats a domestic hot water supply and boosts the return water temperature prior to reentry to the furnace coil. The heat exchanger reduces fuel use, pollution and wear of the furnace and burner. A typical heat exchanger installation includes an oil or gas burner located on a furnace or boiler having a flue pipe leading to a gaseous outlet, such as a masonry chimney. A short vertical flue section leads to a draft-regulating damper. The flue heat exchanger may be a coil of tubing wrapped around flue section, such that the tubing picks up heat from the heated flue gasses. Preheated water exits from the heat exchanger.

    • A heat recovery system includes a heat exchanger surrounding a flue pipe from a furnace for preheating water. The heat exchanger includes a sleeve surrounding the flue pipe to define an annular space and form a water jacket in direct contact with the flue pipe. Several water storage tanks are connected in series and mounted around the sleeve to absorb heat from the water jacket. The outer water tanks are connected to one end of the water jacket at the downstream end of the flue pipe so that water is carried sequentially through each of the water tanks and through the water jacket surrounding the flue pipe. Typically, the water jacket includes a plurality of baffles to define a tortuous path through the water jacket. A conduit for supplying water to the outer water tanks can be wrapped around the downstream end of the flue pipe in a spiral manner to preheat the water prior to feeding to the water tanks. The preheated water exiting the upstream end of the water jacket can also pass through a conduit that is wrapped around the flue pipe in a spiral fashion to further heat the water before directing to a conventional water heater or domestic water supply.

    • A heating system for a building that includes a furnace having a water jacket surrounding a burner unit. Heated water is circulated from the water jacket to a heat exchange system in the building such as radiators and the water is returned to the water jacket through a return conduit to be reheated. Water from the jacket is also circulated through supplemental conduit through a gas tube water heat exchange apparatus located at the exhaust flue from the furnace for recovering heat from the exhaust gases. Water heated from the exhaust gases returns to the primary circulation system. More specifically, water flows from the cooler portions of the water jacket and/or the return conduit of the main circulation system to the gas-to-water heat exchange unit. Water flows from the gas-to-water heat exchange unit to the relatively warmer portions of the jacket and/or to the primary conduit that delivers water from the jacket to the heat exchange system of the building.

    • A fuel-fired fluid heating appliance, such as a gas-fired boiler (FIG. 1) is provided for heating a fluid such as water circulating in a central heating system. The boiler includes a flue 4 for discharging the combustion products, e.g. exhaust gas, to atmosphere by way of a heat exchanger 8 incorporated within a portion 6 of the flue 4 external of the boiler housing 1. The heat exchanger 8 is provided with an inlet 16 to receive water from a return flow pipe 36 and an outlet 17 to discharge the water to the inlet 35 of the boiler primary heat exchanger 3. The heat exchanger 8 (FIG. 2) is provided with a number of ducts 18 along which the exhaust gas travels to transfer its heat to the water circulating within compartments 29 to 33 within the heat exchanger housing 15. The external portion 6 of the flue 4 is disposed at an angle of 20.degree. downwardly to the horizontal so that any exhaust gas condensing in the heat exchanger 8 flows down the flue base 9 to a discharge spout 10 and collector weir 11. In an alternative arrangement (FIG. 4), the condensate outlet 45 is located at the base of the flue 40 within the boiler, the outlet 45 terminating outside the boiler housing 1. In this case that portion 42 of the flue external of the boiler and incorporating the heat exchanger slopes upwardly at an angle of 20.degree. to the horizontal.

    • A method and apparatus for efficiently recovering heat from a gas stream such as discharged flue gas. The gas stream is countercurrently contacted with a liquid medium in two stages. A first countercurrent contact stage is between a partially cooled gas stream and cold liquid medium in a bed of packing through which the cold liquid medium flows downwards and the partially cooled gas stream flows upwards, so that a warmed liquid medium and fully cooled gas stream are produced. The second countercurrent contact stage is between the warmed liquid medium derived from the first contact stage and the hot initial gas stream in a plurality of parallel vertically oriented passages. The warmed liquid medium flows downward on the inner walls of the vertically oriented passages as a thin liquid film, while the hot initial gas stream flows upwards within the vertically oriented passages, so that a fully heated liquid medium and the partially cooled gas stream are produced. The second contact stage accomplishes high direct contact heat transfer with low mass transfer, so that minimal heat is lost as heat of vaporization of liquid medium evaporated into the gas stream. The fully heated liquid medium is passed in indirect heat exchange with a fluid, so that the liquid medium is cooled and the fluid, which may be water, air, or a process fluid stream, is heated.

    • A heat exchanger wherein an upright insulated outer jacket contains a body of relatively cold liquid and spacedly surrounds an upright hollow cylindrical heat conducting body which, in turn, spacedly surrounds a helical heating body confining a flowing heating medium. The upper and lower ends of the heat conducting body are open so that cold liquid can enter the heat conducting body from below to exchange heat with the medium in the helical heating body, to thereby rise in the heat conducting body, and to issue at the upper end of the heat conducting body. The upper end of the heat conducting body has a flow restrictor which defines an outlet opening for the heated liquid. An electric heater can be installed in the outer jacket to heat the liquid when the supply of warmer medium is insufficient.
