    • An improved disc clamper and a disc drive equipped with the disc clamper is disclosed. The disc clamper is used in a disc drive for carrying out playing back or playing back and recording of a disc which is rotated by means of a turntable movable between a raised position and a lowered position. The disc clamper is supported rotatably and movably in up and down direction by a support member with an opening provided above the turntable so as to hold the disc between the clamper and the turntable moved to the raised position The disc clamper comprises a disc clamper main body including a cylindrical part, which has a substantially cylindrical shape and a diameter almost equal to the diameter of the turntable, to be inserted into the opening in the support member, and a flange part provided integrally with the upper circumference of the cylindrical part so as to be supported on the upper surface of the support member, an attraction means provided in the disc clamper main body to be attracted to the turntable, and a plurality of disc pressing protrusions projecting outward in the radial direction from the lower circumference of the cylindrical part of the disc clamper main body. This disc clamper is light and has a simple structure for easy assembling, and makes it possible to press the top surface of the disc with an effectively large area.

    • A disc drive includes a disc drive main body having a playback or recording/playback mechanism of a disc and a disc tray which is constructed to support the disc thereon and is movable with respect to the disc drive main body between a disc eject position and a disc loaded position; and a motor provided in the disc drive main body for moving the disc tray, wherein the moving speed of the disc tray is variable by changing the number of rotations of the motor. The motor is driven by rectangular pulses from the motor driver, in which the number of rotations of the motor is varied by changing the on/off widths of the rectangular pulses so that the moving speed of the disc tray is reduced in a stepwise manner over the period from the start to the stop of the disc tray movement. This enables to realize a high speed movement of the disc tray without increasing the load to be imposed on the disc and the loading mechanism and the like with the use of a relatively small gear ratio in the rotational speed reduction mechanism, which results in easy operation of the emergency eject mechanism and the manual loading mechanism.

    • An improved video disc drive which is capable of reproducing a motion picture from a compact disc as well as conventional applications including a digital audio and a computer data base is disclosed. The video disc drive includes an optical unit for providing an optical beam to a surface of a compact disc to sense a reflected optical beam indicative of pits on said compact disc and generating an electric signal corresponding to the sensed optical beam, a servo controller for controlling a rotation of the compact disc and positioning the optical unit on the surface of the compact disc, an amplifier for amplifying the electric signal from the optical unit to an amplitude greater than a predetermined level, a digital signal processor for demodulating the electric signal from the amplifier to reproduce digital data and error-correcting the digital data, a CD-ROM decoder for decoding the digital data from the digital signal processor and providing the decoded digital data to a host computer or other external device through a CD-ROM standard interface bus, an MPEG decoder for separating the video data from audio data from motion picture data from the digital signal processor and decoding the video data and the audio data based on a predetermined protocol and outputting the decoded video and audio data to an external monitor, and a micro-computer for controlling an overall operation of the disc drive based on the instruction from the host computer or other external device by controlling the servo controller, the CD-ROM decoder and the MPEG decoder.
