    • A method for applying an electric charge in ink jet printers of the so-called continuous kind, in which electrically conductive ink or like medium is forced in the form of a jet (3) from a container through a nozzle (1) or the like and is caused to form droplets (4), which are electrically charged and which are caused to pass deflecting electrodes (6) to which a voltage is applied and are caused to travel along a movement path dependent, inter alia, upon the electric charge, thereby to provide a pre-determined transcript or the like on a printing sheet (5) or corresponding material. The method according to the invention is particularly characterized in that disturbances of a given kind are generated in a known manner by means of a piezo-electric crystal (8) and are caused to act upon the jet (3) in a manner to cause the jet to disintegrate into droplets (4) in a pre-determined fashion, and in that the ink is electrically charged in the nozzle (1) by varying the voltage applied while taking into account the pre-determined frequency at which droplets are separated, whereby practically each droplet (4) is given an individual, pre-determined charge lying in relation with the level of voltage applied on conjunction with the separation of the droplets (4). The invention also relates to an arrangement for carrying out the method.

    • An ink jet printer in which ink particles separated from an ink jet at positions shifted from the normal charging electrode position are maintained charged at all times thereby preventing the separated particles from reaching the recording medium and being displaced thereon as moise. Auxiliary charging electrodes are provided adjacent the charging electrodes which control the charging of the ink particles according to a printing signal. The auxiliary charging electrodes can be provided as first and second sets of electrodes disposed on either side of the charging electrodes or as a continuous set of plates running from a position near the nozzles past the charging electrodes.

    • An ink jet printer is disclosed employing a row of multiple ink jet nozzles aimed at a moving target or copy sheet. Each nozzle has a separate charging electrode associated with it but all the nozzles share a pair of common deflection plates that divert charged droplets over a shared gutter toward the target. Uncharged droplets go into the gutter. An electrostatic lens is shared by all the nozzles being positioned in the path of the charged droplets deflected toward the target. The lens aligns or focuses charged droplets from all the nozzles to a focus line on the target despite misalignment of nozzles relative to a print line on the target.
