    • Controllable fiber optic attenuators (100) and attenuation systems are disclosed for controllably extracting optical energy from a fiber optic (30), and therefore attenuating the optical signal being transmitted through the fiber optic. In one aspect, material is removed from a portion of the fiber optic (30), thereby exposing a surface through which optical energy can be extracted. The portion of the fiber (30) is suspended between two support points, and a controllable material (160) is formed over the surface for controllably extracting optical energy according to a changeable stimulus applied thereto, which affects the refractive index thereof. In one embodiment, the changeable stimulus is temperature, and a controllable heating/cooling source (170) can be provided in the attenuator for control of the attenuation. The limited amount of thermal contact between the suspended, side-polished portion of the fiber optic (30) and the controllable material (160) to surrounding structures offers a more predictable response, and improved response time. The controllable material (160), in one embodiment, may be a dispersion controlled (e.g., matched) polymer, offering uniform spectral characteristics of attenuation across a wavelength band of interest.

    • The invention relates to compositions, methods of use, and methods of manufacture for an intercalated bleach compound and compositions thereof. The intercalated bleach compound has the formula M x (OCl) y (0) m (OH) n where M is an alkaline earth metal such as magnesium, calcium or mixture thereof The values of x and y independently equal any number greater than or equal to 1 (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), and m and n independently equal any number greater than or equal to 0 (e.g., 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), but m and n are not both 0. In addition, the molar ratio of the alkaline earth metal (e.g., magnesium or calcium) to hypochlorite is at least 3: 1. In other words, x is ≥ 3y. The compounds exhibit excellent stability, little or no chlorine bleach odor, exhibit excellent pH buffering characteristics, and less reactivity with organic materials as compared to alternative chlorine bleach products.
